Student parents have higher GPA's but lower graduation rates than their non-parenting peers. My work, in collaboration with Leeward Hui 'Ohana, examines how needs of parenting students changed from 2020-2024 as well as themes that emerged from monthly Parenting Student Advisory Board meetings.
In my work with student parents, I have heard anecdotal evidence of how children’s cognitions have changed through their parents’ college careers, but I would like to systematically investigate children’s experiences of their parents in college.
I am interested in how preschoolers’ conceptions about the living world around them intersect with cultural contexts. I am currently collecting longitudinal data with a diverse sample of 4- to 5-year-olds in Hawaiʻi; children draw a picture of a garden at the beginning, middle, and end of the school year.
