Five Islands is lucky enough to boast a vibrant permaculture garden. The permaculture garden - or 'living classroom' - has been run for over 6 years by a passionate teacher called Aaron Sorensen.
I first connected with Aaron and the permaculture garden towards the end of 2022. What made me fall in love with the space, was the freedom of expression there that isn't found in many other places. In the garden, students, teachers and community members collaborate on an equal playing field out of a mutual care for the earth.
As Aaron spoke to me about in my interview with him, the living classroom isn't just a garden, nor is it just a classroom, but rather an 'interactive learning environment' that allows one to ’experience the broader environmental issues through hands-on learning’.
You can read more about what I gathered from this interview in my thesis.
