Background

CONSA, in partnership with Novo Nordisk, has recently established the Community Health Worker (CHW) Initiative, a new endeavor to support retention in the care efforts of children diagnosed with SCD. This 2.5-year project will prioritize recruiting and training community health workers to conduct different activities including:

• Reaching out to families and educating them on coming back to clinical care.

• Educating communities on the importance of newborn screening and clinical care for SCD.

• Working to reduce stigma and misinformation about SCD.

The project will also be working with community-based organizations in the geographic areas of the CONSA catchment areas to support:

• Wrap-around services

• Community support groups

• Education and awareness raising with key opinion leaders
