I worked in 2021 with The Peddie School to introduce portfolio-based assessment. The first step was to take a look at assessment practices and the future of assessment (see the Scales of Value session embedded on the right). After a couple months of working together, I created an interactive training session for school leadership to explore how portfolios might help the school record and reward a high standard of citizenship, one of the school's central aspirations. (See the guide for this session linked below)
I worked in 2022 with Outschool to provide virtual professional development to prepare teachers to work with refugee students around the world.
A typical invitation I drafted to one of the week-long Staff Retreats that began each semester at Woodstock School, from 2014, during my time as Academic Dean and Deputy Head.
A sample powerpoint from 2013, when we were in the middle of a two-year curriculum mapping process based on Understanding by Design and teachers needed some inspiration. I introduced the concept of curriculum mapping as a fractal process built around the school's Desired Learning Outcomes.
Sample outline from an in-service session applying Iain McGilchrist's neurological findings to classroom learning and teaching.
Record of the 2020 virtual session that came at the end of a one-month virtual co-design exercise to answer the question, "What kind of human being should Escuela Americana send out into the world?" Staff began with articulating desired qualities, ranking these qualities, and then brainstorming virtually to identify an appropriate metaphor to capture what the school is trying to achieve. I created the image below to capture the final result, based on the actual lines of a local Amate tree on campus.
Summer Programme I worked to develop and launch. In the first year, we had about 40 students. In the second year, 100 students joined. This summer, the third year, we had 160 participants for nine different courses. The programme has yielded a revenue surplus for the school of around 20% each year.
Proposal for a year-long blended learning course in "Transforming Learning", to be hosted by Schumacher College in Devon. Though the course never materialised, I love the foundation and the possibility it represents and would enjoy working to develop a similar opportunity for educators to grow professionally.
An invitation to an all-staff meeting I was asked to facilitate around the pace of change in the community. This has happened at semi-regular intervals since I moved into the role of founding the Centre for Imagination.
A description of the calendar construction process, after I was asked to facilitate a new way forward in assembling and populating the annual school calendar.
An action plan for the founding of the Centre for Imagination, one of many created over the years--for the overall academic program, as well as for initiatives within the school, such as for our Scholars for Peace program and Outdoor Learning.
The strategic campus master plan, which I helped to develop. I also did the layout and design for this book.
The handbook I created for Maymester, our month of interdisciplinary research projects in the high school.
