Individuals of Black African descent (including Afro-Latinx, Afro-Caribbean, Mixed Race, African-American, or African) have historically been underrepresented in Autism research, which has contributed to racial disparities in treatment and age of diagnosis. Therefore, our mission is to better understand the genetic factors that contribute to the development of Autism in families with Black African ancestry, and the barriers to treatment and diagnosis that these families often encounter.
This is an ongoing project at the Cognitive Neurophysiology Lab (CNL) at Albert Einstein College of Medicine - Montefiore Medical Center.
The CNL is part of several sites across the country on a mission to reduce racial disparity in Autism research. Recruitment for this study is ongoing at all sites shown above.
Our research team has recently published findings which demonstrate significant disparities in the timing of Autism diagnosis for African American children. Learn more about this research by watching our collaborators at Washington University in St. Louis discuss these findings or check out the article!
