The National Standards Project, a primary initiative of the National Autism Center, addresses the need for evidence-based practice guidelines for Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).

The National Standards Project seeks to:

provide the strength of evidence supporting educational and behavioral treatments that target the core characteristics of these neurological disorders
describe the age, diagnosis, and skills/behaviors targeted for improvement associated

with treatment options

identify the limitations of the current body of research on autism treatment
offer recommendations for engaging in evidence-based practice for ASD

Who will benefit from national standards?

We believe that parents, caregivers, educators, and service providers who must

make complicated decisions about treatment selection will benefit from national standards.

Evidence-Based Practice and Autism in the Schools

2nd Edition (2015)

Schools today face the challenge of providing appropriate services to a diverse and increasingly numerous student population diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. In order to achieve this goal, evidence-based practice is essential in the schools.

To assist school professionals as they strive to help these students reach their potential, the National Autism Center has updated its autism manual for educators – Evidence-Based Practice and Autism in the Schools. 2nd Edition.

This invaluable resource includes the current state of research findings, professional judgment and data-based clinical decision making, values and preferences of families, and capacity building. Each chapter sets a course for advancing the efforts of school systems to engage in evidence-based practice for their students on the autism spectrum.

The updated manual also features results of the National Standards Project, Phase 2, including information about the 14 Established Interventions for children and adolescents that have the most research support, produce beneficial outcomes, and are known to be effective.

2020 NCAEP EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICES REPORT

Our National Clearinghouse on Autism Evidence & Practice team at the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute has completed our NEW report on Evidence Based Practices (EBPs). The report includes literature published from 2012-2017 and the findings are combined with the literature from the previous review from 1990-2011. There are five new practices identified, several reconceptualizations and recategorizations of practices, new data related to the study participants (e.g., race/ethnicity/nationality data) and new information about intervention implementation (e.g., where the intervention was implemented and by whom).
