Dr. Amir Shirkhani

Dr. Amir Shirkhani is an Assistant Professor, research supervisor/advisor, and lead researcher with a specialized focus on structural and earthquake engineering. He holds a PhD in Civil/Structural Engineering from the University of Tabriz, one of the top-ranked universities in Iran, graduating with distinction rank and earning recognition as a top-tier talent. He focuses on advanced topics such as Structural Vibration Control, Seismic Resilience, ‎Seismic Rehabilitation and Retrofit, Structural Optimization, Seismic ‎Hazard Levels, ‎Innovative Structural Systems, Performance-Based Earthquake Engineering, Seismic Loss ‎Assessment, Cost-Benefit ‎Analysis, Endurance Time (ET) Method, ‎Machine Learning, etc. 

Dr. Shirkhani’s research portfolio is extensive and impactful. He has made significant contributions to seismic rehabilitation and retrofit. His Ph.D. dissertation centered on the probabilistic performance assessment of steel moment frames equipped with additional dampers using life cycle cost analysis (LCCA). He is an advocate of integrating cutting-edge methodologies into earthquake engineering and structural analysis.

Dr. Shirkhani has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles in esteemed journals such as "Engineering Structures", "Structures", "Journal of Constructional Steel Research", and "Journal of Building Engineering". His works have explored topics ranging from seismic loss assessment of steel structures with rotational friction dampers to the application of endurance time (ET) method for structural performance optimization. Notably, one of his papers in "Environmental Progress & Sustainable Energy" was ranked among the top 10% most downloaded by Wiley.

A recognized expert in his field, Dr. Shirkhani has been awarded prestigious honors, including a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship from Iran’s Elite Foundation and several distinctions for exceptional talent. He has also actively contributed as a peer reviewer for leading journals like "Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering", "Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Vibration", "Scientia Iranica", etc, and served on editorial boards of some journals.

In addition to his research, Dr. Shirkhani is passionate about teaching. He has taught courses ranging from Engineering Mechanics: Statics, Structural Analysis, Mechanics of Materials, Dynamics, Steel Structures, and Concrete Structures at various universities in Iran. He has also advised several M.Sc. and Ph.D. theses, furthering his commitment to cultivating the next generation of engineers.

Dr. Shirkhani’s technical expertise spans a variety of software tools, including MATLAB, OpenSees, and SAP2000, PACT as well as programming in Python. Beyond academia, he has contributed to the civil engineering industry through roles in consulting and structural design, showcasing a balanced blend of theoretical knowledge and practical application.

With a strong dedication to advancing the field of structural engineering, Dr. Shirkhani continues to explore innovative solutions to improve structural resilience and sustainability.
