Procedure and benefits of registering under Legal metrology Act
The Legal Metrology Act, 2009 (the “Act”) was enacted to standardize weights and measures and to regulate the use of weighing and measuring instruments. Under the Act, all weighing and measuring instruments must be registered with the State Legal Metrology Officer.
Registration under the Act is mandatory for all manufacturers and importers of weighing and measuring instruments. Registration is also required for all repairers and calibrators of such instruments.
Protection from arbitrary and excessively high fees charged by repairers and calibrators
The right to complain to the State Legal Metrology Officer if you are charged excessive fees
The right to have your weighing or measuring instrument calibrated or repaired only by registered repairers and calibrators
The right to have your weighing or measuring instrument tested for accuracy by the State Legal Metrology Officer
The right to use only registered weighing or measuring instruments.
Legal metrology is the science of weights and measures. It is the study of the measurement of physical quantities such as length, mass, time, temperature, electric current, luminous intensity, and volume.
In many countries, including the United States, legal metrology is regulated by government agencies. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is the primary federal agency that develops legal metrology standards in the US.
The globally accepted units of measurement – known as the International System of Units (SI) – are used to ensure that measurements made in different countries are comparable. This promotes fair trade and helps to prevent fraud.
In addition, legal metrology standards help to ensure the safety of products and services. For example, fuel pumps and certain medical devices must meet specific accuracy requirements.
As per the Legal Metrology Act 2009 and The Weights & Measures (Enforcement) Act, 1976, any business establishments carrying out packaged commodity business or production, storage, distribution, sale or import of any package commodities shall be required to get their premises registered under the Legal Metrology department of their state.
