CHAOS

Chaos in Ancient Greek had a very different meaning, originally signifying a yawning void or chasm at the dawn of creation rather than disorder. The term χάος literally denotes ‘emptiness,’ ‘vast void,’ or ‘gaping abyss,’ deriving from the verb χαίνω (khaínō), “to gape”. It is related to χάσκω (kháskō), meaning “to yawn” or “be wide open,” emphasizing the image of a primordial gape. In its earliest attestations, the word simply described a physical chasm or empty space rather than confusion or disorder. Chaos was later personified in Greek myth as a primordial deity, one of the Protogenoi.
