Alternative Spring Break Outreach
Stony Brook University
Stony Brook University
ASBO is a student-run volunteering organization at Stony Brook University. We look to promote a lifelong spirit of volunteerism within our student community through various outreach opportunities that culminate in a Spring Break trip in another state.
Our mission is to promote critical thinking, social action, and civic engagement for a lifetime by combining education, reflection, and direct service on the local, regional, and national levels. We are dedicated to helping under served communities and creating opportunities for college students to give back to their community and develop their leadership skills.
We travel to a location in need during spring break and volunteer with an organization for the entire week. We also have local volunteering opportunities and team building activities throughout the school year to grow and help our community at Stony Brook.
The act of volunteering to help people in need, and create a positive and impactful change through service.
Reflecting on the community service work done and learning how that impacts us and our communities.
ASBO was developed in 2005-2006 by students apart of the Stony Brook University Annual Student/Faculty/Staff retreat, and through the lens of the 2006 Year of Community's theme of "Giving." In realizing the need for Stony Brook to get involved with giving back to the community, a core group of students began to work diligently to create an alternative break program to benefit communities in need while building a spirit and tradition of giving within the university.
