Sierra Burton was Iota Lambda's first president; she was a fantastic leader by setting examples for future leaders coming in ASA. Here is what she has to say about being the chapter's first president along with some of her favorite memories of Alpha Sigma Alpha.
"First, one of my favorite memories is the first time I met everyone. We all went and got pizza in Downtown St. Augustine and then sat under the gazebo and talked for a few hours. I started to make new friends that night and that was when I knew I wanted to be a part of Alpha Sigma Alpha. After meeting the women that decided to join the Iota Lambda chapter, I realized that I wanted to step into a leadership position. I love each and every member of the chapter so much and I wanted to lead us in making a mark on campus as well as help us gain new members who will one day run the chapter themselves! I feel so lucky that I had the opportunity to be the first President of Alpha Sigma Alpha Iota Lambda. As well as to lead ASA's first chapter in Florida and Flagler College's first National Panhellenic Sorority. ASA is super special to me because I have found so many friends I would have never met without it. Our chapter is so lucky to be made up of people from different backgrounds and studying an array of different majors at Flagler. ASA gave me a home away from home in the wonderful women that make up our chapter to what it is today. We are still ever growing and changing and I love seeing all the progress that is being made by those who are now in leadership."
Avalon Cartier is one of Iota Lambda's first graduates in May 2021. She received her BA in Theatre Arts and minored in music and is currently excited for her next steps in life. When asked why she joined Alpha Sigma Alpha on her final semester of college she replied,
"I joined ASA as a founding member because a big part of the Flagler College community is building your legacy. I think the creation of an Alpha Sigma Alpha chapter at Flagler is monumental. It was a chance to be a part of something bigger than myself, a chance to meet new people and try new things. I am very proud of the fact that I get to say I was a member of the Iota Lambda chapter."
Although Avalon and two other graduates of Iota Lambda were here for a short time, they made a great impact on the legacy that will be continued here in this chapter. We strive to show kindness and love towards each woman that comes to us, and Avalon is a great example of that.
Amanda Gregory is our chapter's current Scholarship chair, (2023) she joined in Fall 2022 and has been active within the chapter. We asked her a few questions about how she found herself in Alpha Sigma Alpha and what she is excited for continuing in the future of ASA.
"Growing up as the youngest of four and only girl, it was never a doubt that I wanted to join a sorority for its sisterhood. All it took for me to make my decision was summer recruitment. I vividly remember getting off of the zoom call and running to my parents to say this is for me! Overall, Alpha Sigma Alpha has taught me professionalism, what it means to be a young lady, and just how special we are in the world. Attending national events has shown me just how special ASA truly is and how it should never be taken for granted. I can’t wait to see Alpha Sigma Alpha and our chapter grow and become so much bigger than we could have ever imagined. I’m looking forward to another great recruitment and year full of some of my favorite women. If there was any piece of advice I could give to a young women who may be interested in Greek life would be to give it a chance, and let everything else fall into place. I could not imagine my life without ASA and I know one day it will lead to many more connections and opportunities for the rest of my life!"
Meet Harleigh Peck, our 2023 VP of PR and Recruitment. Recruitment can sound overwhelming, but Harleigh has put together a list of things to remember and help you with.
"Are you interested in becoming a part of the Alpha Sigma Alpha Sisterhood? There’s always an opportunity to join as we recruit all year round. We host a series of formal recruitment events that allows you to get to know us, our sorority, and what commitment looks like, open events that will be announced that anyone is welcome to attend, and we host tabling events throughout the year that we invite you to stop by to say hi and get more information. At any time, fill out out interest form to get in contact with a sister who will guide you in the right direction, answer any questions, and who will be a friend in the process.
How should you prepare? What should you bring to recruitment?
Bring a good attitude and smile! We want to get to know YOU. Don’t worry about bringing anything but yourself. Preparation is always good, so plan some cute outfits! Our first night in our formal recruitment events will be a more fancier attire than the others. So dress to impress in what you feel your best in!
Don’t stress or worry about anything, come ready to learn and meet new girls. Be open to new people and conversations. You got this!"
