The A.S. Proctorio Survey was not designed to be representative of the entire student body. These qualitative submissions illustrate some of the students' suggestions on Proctoring alternatives.
"The professor can proctor us via zoom."
"Do any exam or any of the sort through zoom."
"Zoom"
"Have professor proctor test over zoom or have open not tests most students aren’t learning much from the testing and learning in place anyways."
"Id rather prefer professors watch us live when taking an exam or test."
"Zoom > Proctorio. At least they can still watch you, but without the excessive eye monitoring movements and the location you’re in. Feels really invasive."
"Zoom meetings."
"Proctoring exams via Zoom is an alternative. Making exams open note is also an option. Simply trusting students and assuming the best is another avenue for testing."
"Zoom with audio and video. Canvas. Harder or longer take home exams, writing essay papers, group or individual projects, literally anything else."
"Zoom tests would be better, or have tests be automatically open notes."
"Have a zoom testing session. Where student have their camera on. Mic off to avoid distractions. Have student have a clear testing area. Then students can take the test while the teacher has a full screen of their students during a live session. It allows students to ask questions directly about a test."
"One of my professors has used canvas quiz link for midterm exams and quizzes. We still had zoom camera on so she’d make sure that no one was doing inexcusable habits. And it sure was less problem then proctorio cause I didn’t see anyone having a problem. Also, if we had a questions about the test we could ask her right away from the zoom chat."
"They could zoom proctor which may teachers do now."
"I took a proctors exam with DSPS. I think it is better that way. Just use your phone for zoom or laptop and share screen. They should also allow onscreen solutions for math classes. "
"Taking tests on zoom breakout rooms where professors could go into any one they would like at any time (sort of like the concept of the panopticon)."
"Creating alternative ways of testing knowledge. ex. projects, WHY questions (explain your knowledge), using short answer format to assess knowledge, student must use what they know to create a well thought out response that would prove their knowledge."
"Written exams submitted by pdf."
"Showing work for math courses or allowing open notes on harder tests."
"Projects, exploratory work, open note exams."
"Social distance testing, just for midterms and finals. Essays for the rest of the assignments and exit cards with questions seen in class."
"Time limits on exams or plagiarism checking platforms upon submissions."
"Having more personalized exams so it doesnt pop up on quizlet, more short answer to test knowledge more than memorization."
"Dont use proctorio. Dont watch us from camera. No time limit on exam. But more encourage student to learn by telling them please l want you to guys learn or do more practice during class help them willing to teach them. Ask questions may be harder but with no attempt limit. You can ask hard so we can have time to think and learn from it like one my teacher does it."
"Write the exams in a way that requires thinking and not just rote memorization. No policy change needed. Don’t stick a camera in peoples’ homes."
"Include essay questions about the material, if what they’re worried about is students searching up answers they could do that."
"Unfortunately, it's a lot difficult to ensure academic integrity. But it's possible to create questions where you can access your book to do them, a few of my classes has changed to an open book format and the content is still very challenging."
"For essay assignments, use turnitin to ensure that answers have not been plagiarized. For MC or FR exams it is really a reflection of the professor's ability if students have to look up answers. To increase security, download a secure browser."
"The type of examination they choose should suffice any concerns of academic integrity, anything in addition is excessive and predatory."
"Recording screen only, it won’t invade privacy, and students would feel less overwhelmed and stressed."
"Only browser lockdown."
"I think a browser that lock tabs is fine, but I don’t like the idea of a camera monitoring our movements during exams."
"There already is a program that professors can enforce for students to download to computers, that locks their screens, meaning they are unable to switch between tabs to cheat and look things up (I had used it in high school)."
"Students can be asked to submit their own handwritten drafts to ensure that they wrote it and they can use the page monitor system to ensure that students do not open other pages."
"Have students send in pictures of written work or don’t be so crazy about background noise or interruptions that are out of the students control. Maybe have a live person review the footage so students aren’t at the whim of an Orwellian concept."
"Trust your students! Stop relying on test taking as a priority for knowing whether your students are really learning!"
"Trust the students.
"I think teachers can trust the students more."
