Sample Arts-Focused PLP

For Educators:

This sample PLP was created from the perspective of a student who is fictional. Some of the student work, however, was either based on work done by real students or was actual work used with the permission of students. School-based materials - such as rubrics, etc. - were, when possible, created from actual materials used in Vermont schools today.

Background:

The student who created this PLP is interested in the arts and animal welfare. She uses these interests to explore social justice, use her work from Vermont (and National) History Day to earn a social studies credit, explore social change through participation in the Burlington City and Lake (BCL) program, challenge herself by participating in Poetry Out Loud, complete an arts-focused internship with an animal rescue agency, and explore colleges with good art programs.

Overview of Materials:

Below is a summary of what you'll find in each section of this PLP:

About Me

  • Student art work;
  • Explanation of student interests;
  • A project from art class - creating an Ikigai - that students can use to help them understand their interests, passions, and purpose;
  • Results from a personal strengths test;
  • Copies of a recent report card as a lens into academic strengths and weaknesses.

Explore Social Justice: Goal 1

  • Student expectations using the Vermont Arts PBGRs and school-specific learning targets;
  • An arts project rubric;
  • Evidence from a BCL community project;
  • Student Reflection.

Public Speaking: Goal 2

  • For this goal, the student decides to participate in Poetry Out Loud as a way to try to overcome a fear of public speaking;
  • Expectations, culled from Poetry Out Loud materials "Advice for the Student" as well as school-specific expectations;
  • Action Steps, including links to "how to" videos from the Poetry Out Loud web site;

Careers in the Arts: Goal 3

  • For this goal, the student would like to use her art skills to benefit an animal shelter;
  • Student expectations which are pulled from the Vermont Portrait of a Graduate;
  • Action Steps, in which the student uses a graphic-novel style guide to internships created by a high school student to inform her actions;
  • Evidence, including student art work created for an animal rescue shelter;
  • Student reflection.

My Future Plans

On this page, the student is thinking about what their pathway might look like in both the immediate (summer plans) and long-term (college choices) future. The student is weighing opportunities from Governor's Institute of Vermont to career technical center enrollment to choosing potential college tours.
