What is a symposium?
A symposium can have various meanings within academia, but, in this case, the Arts & Letters Symposium is a mini-conference in which participants from the different disciplines in the Division of Arts & Letters meet to present research, share creative works, discuss ideas, and connect across the disciplines. There will be a keynote speaker, panels, breakout sessions, and creative readings. What is a symposium?

All CBU students, both graduate and undergraduate, are welcome to submit proposals for the symposium. Students need not be currently enrolled in a course housed in the Division of Arts & Letters or majoring in a related field. However, if students are currently enrolled in or have recently completed such a class, work submitted to such a course for class credit may also be proposed for presentation at the symposium. We encourage students to discuss their projects with their professors as they compose their proposals and project.
Why should I submit a proposal?
Students wanting to get feedback on their research, test out new ideas, demonstrate their creative abilities, share their group project, or otherwise participate in the life of the mind with a like-minded and sympathetic audience will benefit from participating. Plus, you can list your participation on a resume or an application to grad school. While the symposium is designed to focus on student research, faculty wanting to co-present with students are also strongly encouraged to submit a proposal. Why should I submit a proposal?
How do I submit a proposal?
Each potential presenter should submit a 100-150 word abstract/proposal describing the presentation's content and format. If the proposal is for a group presentation, please also include all group members' names and contact info. Student presenters are highly encouraged to discuss their proposal and presentation with a faculty member before submitting.The deadline to submit abstracts is March 10, 2026. To submit a proposal to the symposium, please email your abstract as an attached Word or PDF document to artsandletterssymposium@calbaptist.edu.** In the subject line of your submission email you must note the academic discipline of your presentation: History & Government, Modern Languages & Literature, or Communication Arts. What kind of presentations and topics are appropriate to propose?
The symposium is open to various topics and styles of presentation—from traditional research papers to creative readings, multimedia presentations, 5-minute lightning talks, dramatic performances, and more. A full list of potential topics and formats is available on the formal call for papers.What kind of presentations and topics are appropriate to propose?
Who may attend the symposium?
The symposium is open to all CBU faculty, staff, and students, and to any other friends of the university, including parents, who might be interested in attending. (Given the scholarly nature of many of the presentations, please carefully consider whether to invite children to attend.)Please note that photographs may be taken at the symposium and used for promotional purposes. Who may attend the symposium?
What should I expect at the symposium?Symposiums are opportunities for participants to share ideas with each other both within and outside of sessions. Presenters and attendees each have certain responsibilities.As a presenter you can expect that audience members listen attentively. You contribute to the audience members' enjoyment and interest by ensuring that the audience, who may be unfamiliar with your topic, understands why your topic and ideas matter. Why should anyone care? Why do you care?As an audience member, you can expect to have a lot of choices about different sessions to participate in. You should generally attend the entirety of a session, unless it is designed to have people pop in and out. You are expected to listen attentively to speakers, to ask good questions, and to encourage the presenters (even if you disagree with them!).Both presenters and attendees should generally expect to stay for the entirety of the symposium, not just for their own sessions. It can be discouraging to presenters or the keynote speaker to speak to an empty room. In a spirit of collegiality and hospitality, plan to attend the entire symposium.
