For more information read the following:

Zone 1: Masks and disguises!

Discover the wonderful weirdness of Snapchat's virtual mask collection.

Brooke Rosen
  • Snapchat is always adding new special effects – "Lens Filters" (masks, mostly) are a crowd favorite. Brooke (on the left) demonstrates several filters, while Amanda (on the right) gives us a one-woman master class in character-driven story telling using the lens filters to great effect.
  • When the camera is pointed at someones face (usually in selfie mode), hold a finger over the face to bring up the Mask library. It make take some time for the new masks to be downloaded to your phone. Once they are on your phone, you can start trying on different masks.
  • To save and share your mask, press the circle/ring once to take photo, or hold to take a video. Some masks have voice effects too. Other masks are designed for two people to share. See what you can find!
  • To complete this assignment take and share some selfies with friends.

Zone 2: Creative Imagination

Paint the World with Snapchat and Your Imagination.

Let's open our minds to the creative potential of Snapchat.

I call it "DIY Augmented Reality" but it's simpler than that.

We can start with digital face painting or fantasy world creation.

Snapchat gives us a crude paintbrush to paint the world.

It takes imagination to see the potential,

and patience to bring it to life.

Check out my "greatest hits" for inspiration:

  • Look around you... what do you see that you could play with?
  • Can you turn a window into a portal?
  • Can you turn an object into a monster?
  • What is the most fantastical scene you can create with Snapchat?
  • Draw something that improves upon reality or shows us your imagination.
  • Save your progress and it can turn into an animation.

Story Telling Missions

What stories can we tell about ourselves?

What stories can we tell about where we are?

What characters can we make up?

Meet Amanda Bell. She uses Snapchat's lens filters to play different characters in her story.

Story Mission:

Introduce yourself to Snapchat.

Give Snapchat a tour of where you are.

Assume 1 or more characters using the lens filters.
