Just 20 km from Florence, Artimino is a walled medieval village located on top of one of Montalbano's hills, known for its numerous historical and artistic testimonies.
Archaeological pieces of evidence demonstrate that there was a rather important Etruscan urban settlement in Artimino; the inhabited area was brought to light near the Medici "Paggeria".
The present village was born within the walls of a medieval castle whose existence is documented since 1026.
The Medicean Villa, also called La Ferdinanda or Villa of the hundred chimneys, is on a hillock opposite that of Artimino.
The villa was built at the wish of the Grand Duke Ferdinando I de' Medici. It was built in just four years, from 1596 to 1600, and it is a masterpiece of the famous architect Bernardo Buontalenti.
Nowadays, the Tenuta di Artimino is a corner of paradise in the heart of Tuscany. Among the gentle hills of the Carmignano area, this ancient estate of Medici origins is a Unesco heritage site.
