For Activity 1, students had to prepare logos related to the subject of the project. The students of the Greek team prepared 5 logos, which were first presented and then voting inside the team was carried out. Two logos were finally selected and presented in Activity 1 in France. The Greek logos were also voted for by our partners during the Activity. Eventually, the logo which our student Eleni Prodromiti created is the official logo of the project "Art and Space in the City".

For Activity 1, the students also prepared a short video presenting our city, Chaidari.
Students studied articles to familiarise themselves with the subject "Art and Space in the City" as this is understood in the Greek context. Two examples are Modern Art and Public Space or Contemporary Art and Public Space in Greece.
For Activity 2, students had to prepare a presentation with spaces of Chaidari which could be offered for a work of art. At first, the students worked in groups and explored the whole area of the city. They talked about the spaces and took a lot of photos. At the second stage of this task, the students had to explore how realistic it would be to install "art" in these spaces, considering various factors, for example authorisation and possible destruction. The students arranged a meeting with the Deputy Mayor, responsible for Culture and Education in the city of Chaidari, and talked about these issues. At the third stage, the group of students presented their final choices and the whole team chose what would be included in the presentation. At the final stage, students had to measure and make sketches of the spaces. All the information gathered was eventually included in the presentation.
For Activity 3, the Greek students had to prepare their own suggestions for works of art for the German school. The students had to work individually or in groups. First, they had to study the German presentation. Then, they had to choose the space they preferred and think of its function and its importance. Finally, they had to prepare a project which included their suggestion with the reasons they reached this decision. To reach the desired results, students had the opportunity to talk about art, see a plethora of art works and discuss them with the art teacher in our weekly group meetings.
For Activity 4, students had to prepare a model or maquette for the work of art they had visualised. The work is called "Under my Umbrella" and is to be installed on the square of the city of Heusenstamm in Germany. The work is based on an idea by Nikolas Skandalis but eventually all the students of our team worked on its development and realisation.
The idea started with the photo of the square. As the kids said, "For us, the square is the place where we meet our friends. It’s a place where a lot of people spend their free time. This led us to the concept of friendship and that was what we wanted to share with our German friends."
Then, it was the umbrella. The umbrella offers a feeling of safety and protection. These are usually linked to the concept of friendship.
The project was then developed around 3 items connected to each other.
1. The bookstand.
2. The book with a story of two friends.
3. The umbrella which protects the other two parts and is also the symbol in the book.
But then the objects took a more abstract form.
The bookstand: the square becomes part of the concept and it's not any more just the venue. It will function as the bookstand itself.
The book: It hasn't got pages to browse, but it's a path to walk on and follow to the end of the story.
The umbrella: The end (and aim) of the path; it is big and red; it covers and protects everything.
The umbrella is the only part with colour because we want to stress its power: the feeling of protection and safety it offers.
The parts are plastic-coated so they can stand weather conditions.
This was a long process.
First, different versions were prepared in digital form.
At this stage, the sketches which constitute the narration of the story were being drawn by a team of students while others were preparing the maquettes on the computer, For this reason, the model consists of the repetition of only one sketch.
In addition, a coloured version of the story was created but was eventually discarded because the idea was better projected in black and white, having only a red umbrella to stress its power.
Then, the digital version was installed on the square to see the effect it created. A series of models was thus prepared.
In the meantime, the sketches were also drawn by hand and then turned into a digital file as well.
When everything was ready, the files were sent to print as the kids were eager to see their work and decided not to wait till February but send it to Germany with the team that would participate in Activity 4. When printing was over, everyone was more than happy with the result.
Finally, a paper version of the story was offered to Adolf Reichwein Gymnasium. You can see - and read - our story in the file that follows.
During the Activity, Greek and German students jointly presented the work of art. You can see the presentation in the file below.
This is a video with the preparation of the work "Under my Umbrella".
Pain and Hope
Just before the end of the project the Italian school "Liceo Artistico D. Colao" sent us the work of art they had prepared for us. The work was installed in our school's entrance hall as it had already been agreed. Here is the installation video.
The exhibition
After all the work was completed, all five partner countries started preparing the exhibition of the work done during these two years. The main exhibits were photos of all the works of art during the preparation phase and after they had been installed. The exhibition was arranged to start on the same day in all five countries, i.e. 9th May, Europe's day. For the Greek school the venue of the exhibition was the Town Hall of Chaidari, after arrangements with the municipality. In the end of the school year, all the works will be transferred to school where they will be exhibited on a permanent basis.
Presentation of the project - Dissemination
An important dissemination event for our project was the presentation to teachers and students of Western Athens after an invitation of the Regional Directorate. Four of the senior students along with a teacher prepared a presentation, talked about their experience, what they earned from the project, what they valued most and what they cherished and motivated more students and teachers to participate in similar programs.
