On May 18, 2021, I joined a PTK beach clean-up activity with other PTK members and volunteer students. The event was at White Plains Beach located fifteen minutes from Hawaii Tokai International College. I have never participated in a beach clean-up activity because my home city in Japan did not have a beach. I was looking forward to the activity. Before the beach clean-up event, I thought we would get a lot of trash. However, the beach was very clean. Only one bag was filled with trash when we gathered the trash all together. In Japan, there are many beaches which are very dirty, so the seas are also dirty. If people cooperate would not throw trash on the beach, the Japanese sea would be cleaner. I think beach cleanup activity should become more common in Japan, so we can keep all beaches beautiful. I enjoyed the beach cleanup activity today.

What is PTK?

In Spring 2010, the Beta Sigma Omicron Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society was established at Hawaii Tokai International College. The largest honor society in American higher education, Phi Theta Kappa has over two million members and 1,200 chapters nationally and internationally. Recognized in 1929 by the American Association of Community Colleges as the official honor society for junior colleges, Phi Theta Kappa was established in 1928. Its purpose is to “recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students and provide opportunities for individual growth and development through honors, leadership, and service programming.
