What is Fengshui?
Fengshui literally means Wind (风) and Water (水). It originates from Guo Pu (郭璞)'s Book of Burial (葬书) during Jin Dynasty (晋朝). Before Jin Dynasty, Fengshui was called Kan Yu (堪舆). Kan (堪) is the observation of the sky, while Yu (舆) is the observation of the earth. Qi (气), which is the the natural energy in the environment, is key to achieving good Fengshui. The Book of Burial mentioned that Qi spreads with the wind, and stopped by moving water (气乘风则散, 界水而止). Qi can be classified into positive and negative Qi. Positive Qi can enhance your well-being, family harmony and assets. In essence, a Fengshui system or technique harnesses Qi from the environment to enhance the lives of the people staying in the property.
Our thoughts on 'Qi' in modern urban city context
Firstly, can our human eyes see 'Qi' ???
If 'Qi' is not visible to the human eyes, how can we know which direction does it come from? Fengshui systems such as 8 Mansions (八宅游年), Flying Stars (紫白飞星), Xuan Kong Flying Stars (沈氏玄空/玄空大卦) uses defined positions or numbers based on the property's facing and seating directions, with 2 key considerations: Property is near ground level; Property not blocked by other structures.
In modern urban city such as Singapore, many high rise building structures can block the Qi's path leading to your house. Based on the ancient theory that 'Qi' spreads with the wind, can the wind direction be changed by the various building structures? Will the 'Qi' direction be affected?
