Short Bio:
From an early age, Shaquella always knew that art would be more than just a hobby for her. Born and raised in Columbia, SC, she loves painting things and drawing whatever inspires her and piques her interest. Anything from food, clothes and nature. When it comes to the type of artwork that she likes to create, mixed media and watercolor are her area of expertise. She has experience in watercolor, acrylic and oil paint. She also uses chalk pastels and charcoal. Adding in other materials makes it that much more interesting and appealing. As a multidisciplinary artist, she has experience in sewing, pottery, sculpture, painting murals and photography while also creating graphic designs.
Her most recent works in Emotions of Nature, include large scale mixed media paintings that incorporate merging beauty in the natural world with emotion in stylized figures. Using watercolor, gouache, acrylic and glitter, she has made dynamic pieces that give viewers a glimpse into her message. Attending Midlands Technical College, she received her associate in arts degree in 2021. She then transferred to Coastal Carolina University and went on to receive two bachelor's of art degrees in both Graphic Design and Art Studio with a minor in Art History in 2025. She hopes to put all the things she learned on her journey and what she already knows into her future works.
Artist Statement:
I enjoy the little things in life. Like how small details make big impacts. In my works, both large and small, brightly colored figures have detail and movement throughout the entire piece creating organic lines that curve like those in everyday life. When I creating art, I want to make them as dynamic and vibrant as possible. So, what better way than to use than mixed media to capture that? If I could use three words to describe my art they would be colorful, whimsical, and dynamic. My art has color, whimsy, pattern and movement throughout.
I use color to express how I feel and make my pieces fun and vibrant. I really enjoy colors and how they mix and combine with others to make more. It's like I can see them before I even paint them on the paper. When people see my artwork and light up and light up with a smile, I reached a goal. I like that the same joy that I feel and put into making art can be felt by the viewers when seeing it on display.
