The Archaeology of the Modern Era in the Basque Country

Past, present and future

Vitoria-Gasteiz (Spain), 14-15 November 2017

The late development of Post-medieval Archaeology in Europe and its scarce presence in Spanish universities has caused that, in general, the archaeological analysis of post-medieval chronologies has been widely neglected and mainly carried out by developers funded projects. In the last few years, there has been a growing interest on the archaeological investigation of contemporary contexts (such as the Spanish Civil War or emerging heritages), or on the archaeology of Spain’s colonial past. The Modern Era, on the contrary, has received less attention by researchers from an archaeological perspective. Although the number of researchers has increased in the last few years and, therefore, the amount of available information is now quite remarkable, the Archaeology of the Modern Era in the Iberian Peninsula has not been theorized yet and it lacks a research and outreach agenda.

The main aim of this conference is to offer a critical overview of the works that have been carried out in recent years in the Basque Country on the archaeological record of the Modern Era and the transitions (before and after), and reflect on the future of this discipline.

All conference presentations are available here.

For this conference, we invite researchers from different spheres (academia, companies, heritage management, geographers, anthropologists, architecture historians, etc.) to contribute to the construction of an Archaeology of the Modern Era. Although the focus will be the Basque Country, contributions coming from other northern Iberian areas will be welcome. Some possible study subjects are the following:

  • Landscape Archaeology
  • The Archaeology of caserio and rural spaces
  • Urban Archaeology
  • The Archaeology of production and consumption: material culture, foundries, etc.
  • The Archaeology of conflict
  • Heritage management and public archaeology

Send your abstract (maximum 300 words) of your proposed paper, with the names of the authors, affiliation, contact details and keywords (maximum 5), before May 31st 2017, to Idoia Grau Sologestoa (idoia_grau@hotmail.com).

Attendance to the conference is free. However, for organising purposes, we ask you to let us know that you will attend, by sending us your personal details (name, surname, affiliation and ID card), to Idoia Grau Sologestoa: idoia_grau@hotmail.com.

This conference is organised by the Research Group on Heritage and Cultural Landscapes (GIPyPAC) from the University of the Basque Country, as part of the research project ‘Peasant agency and socio-political complexity in the North-western Iberian Peninsula during the Middle Ages’ (HAR2016-76094-C4-2-R) funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitivity.
