Arpan Mandal

A man of science fueled by a passion for art, innovation and spirituality.

Hello,

I am a dedicated Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Southampton (UoS) since December 2022, working closely with Dr. Stuart Middleton. My current research focuses on innovating a few-shot model to detect instances of "Sharenting" in social media posts, where parents might share sensitive information about their children. My expertise lies in Natural Language Processing, Large Language Models, Few-shot NLP, Legal Data Analytics, and Information Retrieval. I study and design NLP solutions for criminologists and social scientists that can be ideally deployed on real-life applications.

Previously, I completed my Ph.D. (funded by the Visvesvaraya PhD Scheme, MeitY, Govt. of India) at The Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur, under the guidance of Prof. Sekhar Mandal and Dr. Saptarshi Ghosh. My doctoral thesis is titled - “Catchphrases in Legal Case Documents: Identification and Applications” (click here for PDF) which involved Information Retrieval from Indian Supreme Court case documents, in the form of catchphrases, extractive summaries, and legal precedents. After my PhD, I worked briefly at The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur as a research assistant for three months where I worked in a project titled "Smart Legal Consultant: AI-based Legal Analytics", funded by the government of India. The project dealt with prediction of applicable legal statutes given the premise or facts of a new court case.

I earned my Ph.D. degree in May 2022 and hold prior academic achievements from Kalyani Government Engineering College and Pondicherry University, India.

Originating from Kolkata, I graduated from Ramakrishna Mission Residential College, Narendrapur, in 2012, with foundational education from The Kendriya Vidyalaya, Dum Dum, India.

Beyond academia, I find joy in reading, brainstorming business ideas, and watching sci-fi films. I also pursue Photography, AI-generated art, and DIY projects avidly as hobbies.
