Design and Fabrication of Power Electronic Controllers for Certain Home Appliance Motors

Sponsoring agency: Tata Center (IIT-BOMBAY) Role: Project Engineer

Duration: 2016 - 2020 Principal Investigator: Prof. Vivek Agarwal

Abstract: Single-phase induction motors and Universal motors are extensively used in home appliances in India. They incur poor power factor and high power loss due to the inefficient motor structure and control. This problem is being addressed from motor point of view by designing highly efficient motors by team MIT. The motor efficiency will be further improved by designing suitable power electronic controller by team IITB. The power factor will also be corrected by properly designing the power controller to ensure reduced power loss on the utility side.

Design and Development of a Low Cost, Rugged Solar PV Micro-Inverter with remote monitoring for Rural Applications

Sponsoring agency: Tata Center (IIT-BOMBAY) Role: Project Engineer

Duration: 2016 - 2019 Principal Investigator: Prof. Vivek Agarwal

Abstract: Micro-inverters are low power (200W to 300W range) grid connected or stand-alone inverters having the potential of high efficiency, compactness, high reliability and high economy in terms of meeting energy needs of small installations e.g. homes, small industries, rural applications. Currently, the micro-inverters are available only as grid connected systems with European or American standards and do not conform to the Indian grid conditions. In this project a low cost micro-inverter is made which is suitable to India grid conditions.

Ultracapacitor Powered LIFT- UPLIFT

Sponsoring agency: Aartech Solonics Role: Project Engineer

Duration: 2016 - 2017 Principal Investigator: Prof. Vivek Agarwal

Abstract: In this project an ultra capacitor (UC) is used as a back-up power supply for elevator application. During a power outage, the lift should continue to run and reach the nearest floor using the given system. To achieve higher efficiency, the system also has provision for storage of regenerative energy in the UC.
