Human freedom in Thomas Aquinas Jean-Marc Goglinjean-marc.goglin@ac-rouen.fr It is accepted that Thomas Aquinas' theory of human liberty is not deterministic. In each of his works, this one gives the man to be able to go on contrary. Without contestation possible, Thomas modifies his conception of the freedom of the man throughout his teaching. In the commentary on the Sentences, he grants primacy to free will: he grants it to be a judgment free from all constraint and necessity. From the De Veritate, the Aquinate gives primacy to the voluntas, the appetitive and motor faculty of the soul. Without minimizing the importance of the referee, he makes it an act, namely the choice of the will. In no work does Thomas make will a paradigm. He none the less proposes an accomplished definition. He distinguishes polysemy from the notion of potentia and allows the voluntas to be both a power and an act; precisely, it gives the will to want naturally but freely and to choose freely. In De Malo and Prima Secundae Pars, he theorizes with precision the difference between the freedom of specification and the freedom of exercise Finally, the Aquinate defines the freedom as the privilege of the will. He allows her to be both a voluntary and desiring faculty, to be in control of her actions and to be free from all necessity: the will may or may not want. But he does not make the choice an indifferent act. The major Thomistic innovations concern the growing interest in metaphysics and ethics. In Summa theologiae, the Dominican root ethical freedom in a psychological freedom and fits into a metaphysics of action that allows the realization of being. Freedom is understood both as a potential to be realized, as a power and an act in the path of the return to God. Thomas therefore gives man the freedom to become free. "The considerations on some philosophers like Kant or Hegel often lack technicality but it also corresponds to the knowledge we had of these authors at the time. The book clarifies the concepts well and corrects some misinterpretations of Thomism. It includes 9 volumes and maybe I can, with time and if you are interested, send you the others (I add another file with the list of volumes). Jean-Paul Murcia. The Hylomorphic Doctrine of Presence by Powers and its Relationship with Contemporary Science François Savardffsavard@rogers.com The thesis focuses on the relationship between hylemorphism and contemporary experimental science. Its title: It is inspired by the works of Father William Wallace, OP, and draws its fundamental principle from the Thomist doctrine on the powers of the human soul. This doctrine includes the notion of the "sequential" mediation of powers (ST I q77 a4, Questions on Soul q13). In short, St. Thomas maintains that the lower powers belong to the human being through the mediation of the higher powers, just as the color of our skin belongs to us through the mediation of that same skin. This notion makes it possible to integrate into the human soul all the "lower" powers of matter - the biochemical, chemical and physical powers - as updated by Father Wallace and his neo-Thomist predecessors. The case is generalized for all material natural numbers. A philosophy of Aristotelian nature, based on hylemorphism, can thus reintegrate all experimental disciplines that deal with material natural numbers: psychology, physiology, biology, biochemistry, chemistry and physics. I conclude that the reunification of Thomism and experimental science, reunification so much desired by Leo XIII, is now demonstrable. The consequences of this reunification are interesting, particularly in ethics and bioethics. This thesis was written at the Dominican University College in Ottawa. Works of Professor Yvan Pelletier yvan.pelletier@fp.ulaval.ca Yvan Pelletier was born in 1946. He is a professor at the Faculty of Philosophy of Laval University (Canada), where he has been teaching since 1975 and where he completed his philosophical training until the PhD, focusing on the teaching of Maurice Dionne, Father Jasmin Boulay and MM. Warren Murray, Alphonse Saint-Jacques and some other professors of an Aristotelian-Thomist tradition initiated at this faculty by Mr. Charles De Koninck. His teaching is designed to offer bachelor's students a presentation of the fundamental principles and method of each of the basic philosophical disciplines - from an Aristotelian perspective: ethics, politics, physics, metaphysics - and to master's and doctoral students a critical reflection on the elements of the contemporary creed - democracy, new morality, symbolic logic, dissociation of being and duty, primacy of consciousness, etc. - from these basic principles. His works also include the reconstruction of a number of courses by Bishop Maurice Dionne and some unpublished translations of Aristotle's treatises and their commentary by St. Thomas Aquinas:- Saint Thomas Aquinas, On the sophisms: De fallaciis.- Aristotle, Protreptic.- Aristotle, Topics (books I and VIII).- Saint Thomas Aquinas, Commentary on the 10 Books of Nicomachean Ethics by Aristotle.- St. Thomas Aquinas, Commentary to Peri Hermeneias, lessons 1 to 7.- St. Thomas Aquinas, Commentary on the Treaty of the Soul of Aristotle (books 1 to 3).- St. Thomas Aquinas, Commentary on the Physics of Aristotle (books I, II, IV).The method used by Professor Pelletier for the translation of Aristotle's comments:"This is a job that I have been fighting for since always and regularly, according to the studies that I have to do for the lessons I have to give. I did not undertake it to deliver a complete translation of either work, but because it is my way of studying. To penetrate thoroughly a text of Aristotle or St. Thomas, I need to be able to say and write in French exactly what they wrote. In the long run, I have come to more or less complete translations of certain treatises.
