HealthSmart Grades 6-9 Curriculum Resource for Families
The Grade 9 Wellness course at Arlington High School is a sequence of Physical Education and Health Education that aligns with the components of the Health Frameworks of the Massachusetts Department of Education and National Standards. Content is drawn from Physical Health, Social and Emotional Health, Safety and Prevention, and Personal and Community Health Strands of the Framework.
Students attend their Grade 9 Wellness class two days per week. Physical Education units are taught throughout the school year with the exception of one quarter when Health Education classes are taught. Physical Education Units include various Fitness Units, Team Sports, Recreational Sports, Rock Climbing, Yoga and Relaxation.
The Arlington Public Schools currently uses the HealthSmart Curriculum as it's baseline Health Education curriculum. Topics fall under the categories of Emotional & Mental Health, Nutrition, Tobacco, Alcohol & Other Drug Prevention, Violence & Injury Prevention, Abstinence, Puberty & Personal Health and HIV, STI & Pregnancy Prevention. Students also take a CPR course as part of their health lessons. All students are scheduled to attend Health lessons in either quarter 2 or 3.
