Dr. Winger's passion for teaching started with tutoring in the tutoring center at Howard University in the late 1990s. His passion grew for teaching as he handled his own classes as a graduate student at Carnegie Mellon, prompting him to commit to primarily teaching institutions, first at Emory and Henry College, and currently at Georgia Gwinnett College. As he as grown as a teacher, he has realized crucial important of belonging and inclusion in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) spaces generally. This has impacted his practice in numerous ways, in using mathematical autobiographies, elevating student voice through authentic feedback, and de-powering his authority and elevating student autonomy. Working with Pittsburgh Public School teachers in a district where eighty percent of the students are Black and 80% of the teachers are white, Dr. Winger worked as part of a team with teachers on the ways in which we could think about doing math and how we position ourselves in the world.
