In astronomy, the Great Rift, is an area of dark bands that appear to obscure the center of the Milky Way galaxy when seen from the earth. They are thought to be an aggregation of overlapping, non-luminous, molecular dust clouds that lie between the Solar System and the Sagittarius Arm of the galaxy.
