Key deliverables from the program thus far
A matched-comparison study evaluating outcomes for households that received mitigation home repairs versus a comparable control group. I built and cleaned a master household registry of over 100 records, then developed a weighted matching algorithm (in R) that scores potential matches on flood risk, locality, and damage profile. The final analysis paired dozens of repaired households with well-matched controls, with a smaller set of core pairs used for deeper case comparison.
What I learned: how to make deliberate decisions in research, including choosing which summary statistics to present and which ones would be misleading given the data's limitations
An interview guide was built in partnership with Reva Panda and reviewed by supervisors to assess the current mental health landscape in Pamlico County for disaster survivors. Coding of interviews and analysis is in progress.
What I learned: how to conduct interviews with people more professional than I am, and how to move from qualitative data into quantitative data
A 7-objective and 4-tiered interview guide used with PCDRC clients, designed to capture both quantitative severity ratings and qualitative context around mold exposure and its effects on residents. Coding of interviews and analysis is in progress.
What I learned: how to design interviews with the residents in mind, considering question order and framing
Supporting materials developed for PCDRC's ongoing grant work, including a spend-down plan for foundation funding, a multi-year partnership summary describing the Duke–PCDRC collaboration, and a community resource brochure organized to prioritize local Pamlico County resources.
What I learned: how to write for a nonprofit audience and funders at the same time, and how to concisely describe years of prior work
