Six tips to become an excellent event photographer

Starting photographers begin to have dreams to turn their passion into a career the moment they get asked to cover events. Doors of opportunities open when budding photographers start to build their network, but work would only keep coming when they truly excel in what they do. San Dieg0-based photographer Arie Eric De Jong shares a few tips to become an excellent event photographer.

Be prepared. It pays to do a thorough research about the event, its cause, attendees, and sometimes the venue itself. Develop a shoot list to present to the client so as to make sure everything is covered. Carry the right gear. Part of being prepared is bringing the right equipment for the job. Make a checklist of all things needed such as lenses and mounts, including extras, to prevent losing power and memory in the middle of the event.

Arrive at the event early to try and build a relationship with the client and other guests. This would get them to feel comfortable to ask for photos later on in the event. Not all events are made equal, so it’s important to know when to use flash.

Mix up the shots, says Arie Eric De Jong. There is room for creativity in event photography no matter how mundane it might feel. Group shots are common during events, but be brave in taking full-body and medium shots of solo individuals or those in smaller groups. Lastly, skip the dining table. Avoid getting photos of clients and guests while eating. It’s just plain respect.
