Following the assessment of over 600 AR apps, we have developed and refined an AR Level Assessment Instrument. Each level details certain characteristics intended to help evaluate apps based upon their utility.
Levels are ‘nested’ so that each subsequent category includes the features of every category which falls below. This instrument, or continuum, assigns each app to an AR Level.
By using this instrument, educators are afforded the opportunity to easily locate AR apps based upon their needs and what type of experience they intend to present to their students.
For an AR app to fall into this category it will use the technology to present a static piece of content. Features of presentation include static images, video or 3D models without the ability to resize, rotate, or move.
For an AR app to fall into this category the presented material must be available for manipulation somehow. Features of manipulation include the ability to rotate, resize, adjust point of view, add & subtract elements, and capture still images and/or video.
For an AR app to fall into this category the manipulation must create opportunities for interaction with the content. Features of interaction include integrating a quiz feature. Interact to progress.
For an AR app to fall into this category the interaction must go beyond simple data gathering and into a higher-level. Features of enhancement include the integration of a narrative structure that provides context.
