Pinfinity AR Pins
Pinfinity AR Pins
Product graciously provided by Pinfinity
I reached-out to several companies to see if they could offer any of their materials as part of our continued AR research, assessment, and review project. Pinfinity was kind enough to provide four different AR pins which I will discuss below - free of charge. This assessment is intended to be an objective review of augmented reality content and functionality as well as educational value. It is not necessarily an endorsement of the product itself. I used an Apple iPad for this review.

For some reason I have always liked pins. Years ago when I often visited Walt Disney World I collected them when the pin craze first hit. Since then, as the initial madness subsided, I have significantly reduced my collection; wishing I would have liquidated when the market was hotter. My current focus is on 'collecting' AR materials for reviews. The cool thing about this product review is the merging of AR and pins. The great folks at Pinfinity were kind enough to send us four of their AR pins. One of their logo, a space shuttle, one Dungeon & Dragons, and a My Little Pony - a vast array as reflected in their website offerings.
Users access the AR features of their Pinfinity pin by downloading the free AR app. The app is available for both iOS and Android. The process could not be much more simply; remove your pin from the packaging and off the backer card, then open the app and place the pin in the viewframe of your device - scanning will occur automatically. Watch as your pin comes to life.
Each of the pins I tried has a different twist. The Pinfinity logo pin activated an animated company info with link buttons to their site and email. The space shuttle pin began with displaying an AR model of the pin accompanied by audio of mission control communicating with the crew of space shuttle Atlantis. By clicking learn more, the app displays labels marking different parts of the shuttle, progressing into a list of metrics to include dimensions, weight, and minimum ground clearances.
The Dungeon & Dragons pin activates an AR animation of a dragon, then a skull, rising above a multi-sided die. This is followed by revolving text reading Tap the graphics to unlock DLC. Touching one of the six images leads to the D&D Official Roleplaying Soundtrack "Midnight Syndicate" on Spotify, a selfie photo frame, or non-AR illustrations. Finally, the My Little Pony pin, featuring the character Rarity. This pin activates an AR model of Rarity as she dances to the MLP theme song. Once the dancing subsides, users can choose to view one of three wallpapers or open a selfie frame to snap a quick pic.
The Pinfinity experience was pretty novel. It brings to life what would otherwise be a mundane piece of metal. App content is interactive and overwhelming easy to use. Models are extremely well designed. These are a great introduction to AR for users, exploring a small nugget of what this technology has to offer.
Pinfinity AR pins are available on their website.
The app is available, at no cost, in both the Apple App Store (iOS) and Google Play Store (Android).
