According to the Shifu website, their Orboot Interactive AR Globe launched onto the market in October of 2017. Prior, it had appeared on Kickstarter and was supported by backers from 60 countries. The 10" globe, absent of any borders or names, is intended to work in concert with the Orboot Earth AR app to create a magical gateway to travel the world. Instead of man-made divides, the surface presents illustrations in six categories: animals, cultures, cuisines, inventions, maps, and monuments. Small star icons are visible as well. These images act as triggers that activate content when using the app.
When I opened the box I found a decent sized - well constructed globe, a passport, guidebook, instructions, and a stamp. The instruction booklet was easy to follow with a helpful section in regards to app setup. The most useful piece was the 'Sync' paragraph which stated that the app needs 15 minutes of internet to download the games. If I were to overlook this point I would have most likely thought the app stalled at some point. The Sync was an automatic step which took the majority of the time needed to get the app up-and-running.
The main menu of the app offers 5 choices: AR Explore, Mysteries, Quiz Wiz, Tour, and Oko Park. To begin assessing the apps AR features I choose AR Explore. On my device's screen a small star icon appeared, similar to the ones found on the surface of the globe. AR models were activated when I centered the star on screen over a star on the globe. The stars act as triggers to initiate AR content. I chose an AR model of a Jaguar. This progressed to a screen offering information and data about the animal along with a 3D model and still image. A voice-over presented some quick information about the Jaguar - as if it were introducing itself. Clicking on the green question mark tab lead to a question I could answer about the animal.
The Mysteries option allows users to choose from 9 different challenges to pursue. I chose 'The Crown Jewel'. I watched a video introducing me to the mystery I have been enlisted to help solve. I had to track the clues by scanning the correct icons on the globe. If I wasn't too sure, I was offered a hint in the form of the exact icon I was seeking. Once I located the icon on the globe, I viewed through my device which activated some fanfare. The search for my next clue began. The story line was well constructed and made for an engaging and enjoyable experience.
Quiz Wiz tests users knowledge within the original six categories. If users need a hint they locate the related icon on the globe and view through their device. The Tour option offers three categories: animals, maps, and cultures. Each presents a 3D (non-AR) model of a globe dotted with an arrow of icons. I was able to zoom-in and choose a specific icon. This activated content related to the icon, in the same way it did when I viewed the Jaguar. The final option, Oko Park, advises users to click on the pulsing icon because their is an emergency. Users are presented with an ecological challenge where they must help the ranger balance the 'Circle of Oko'. One of four resources must be chosen to restore the balance: animals, birds, nature (trees, vegetation, soil, rain), or insects. While not AR, this was a unique experience.
In relation to the AR functionality of the app the triggers worked without fail. During my time using the app, I witnessed no operational issues what-so-ever. The globe worked seamlessly in conjunction with the app to create a unique AR experience. Tutorials and story lines were fluid, fun, and easy to follow. Along with the non-AR features there is more than enough content to stay active for a decent amount of time. Content was presented in such a manner that the user remains engaged. Overall, the Orboot Interactive AR Globe provided a high-quality educational AR experience.
The Orboot Globe is available from Shifu for $54.99 (USD).
The app is available, at no cost, in both the Apple App Store (iOS) and Google Play Store (Android).
