Product graciously provided by Lerner Books
I reached-out to several companies to see if they could offer any of their materials as part of our continued AR research, assessment, and review project. Lerner Books was kind enough to provide a several hardcover books which I will discuss below - free of charge. This assessment is intended to be an objective review of augmented reality content and functionality as well as educational value. It is not necessarily an endorsement of the product itself. I used an Apple iPhone for this review.

I personally like having a book in my hands. Especially when it's a nice hardcover that's quality made. Marry that paper with some of my favorite immersive technology and that enjoyable reading gets kicked up to the next level. Lerner Books definitely takes readers to the next level of interaction and immersion with their Augmented Reality Experience books.
Lerner Books currently offers twenty-one books in their AR experience series. The series is broken down into four topics: Folding Tech, The Gross Human Body in Action, Space in Action, and Creepy Crawlers in Action. Each takes-on a different subject area, from critters that crawl on the ground to crafts that navitage deep space.
The first book I explored was in the Creepy Crawlers line titled 'Stick Insects'. Instructions in the book directed me to download the app and how to access AR models. The app was quickly downloaded. As I progressed through the book I encountered some markers amongst the interesting and informative content about these strange and fascinating insects. The markers were simply the Lerner AR app logo. When I viewed the marker through my iPhone a stick bug came to life. My AR bug slowly crawled up a branch which floated above my desk. Another model showed bugs emerging from their eggs resting on a leaf.
My next book choice was 'Space Machines in Action'. I viewed NASA's Curiosity rover as it traversed the martian landscape and a small two-wheels device knows as the PUFFER. PUFFER stands for Pop-Up Flat Folding Explorer Robots. Also developed by NASA, it's designed to investigate objects such as asteroids and comets. I moved on to an interestingly titled book, 'The Ears and Nose: A Disgusting Augmented Reality Experience'. I learned about how mixed martial arts fighters often damage their ear cartilage, causing scar tissue to form. This info was accompanied by an AR model of an ear which allowed me double-tap my screen and watch in enlarge much like a ear would after sustaining a signifiant enough impact during a fight.
The final book I reviewed was titled 'Folding Tech: Using Origami and Nature to Revolutionize Technology'. At a total of 104 pages, this book was notably larger that the others which roughly each thirty pages in length. I activated an AR model os the InSight Lander which touched down on Mars in 2018. Aside from the AR content, this books discussed topic ranging from ladybugs to geckos in an effort to reveal how we create new inventions based upon what we observe in nature.
Overall, all AR models were very well designed and stable. I was able to adjust my point-of-view based upon how to oriented my device to the marker in the book. Each book, even the larger one, had a couple markers and AR models present. Books are available in hardcover ($23.99-$27.99 USD) or Multi-User eBook ($35.99-$41.99 USD).
Books are available on their website.
The app is available, at no cost, in both the Apple App Store (iOS) and Google Play Store (Android).
