ARBI AR Books
ARBI AR Books
Products graciously provided by ARBI
I reached-out to several companies to see if they could offer any of their materials as part of our continued AR research, assessment, and review project. ARBI was kind enough to provide the three books which I will discuss below - free of charge. This assessment is intended to be an objective review of augmented reality content and functionality as well as educational value. It is not necessarily an endorsement of the product itself. I used an Apple iPad and Samsung tablet for this review.
ARBI AR Books - AR Material Review

Each ARBI book works in conjunction with a unique app. The first book I chose to review was ARBI and the Fire-Breathing Dragon. This book is geared for children ages 5 to 10. Each book from ARBI is intended to highlight three positive attribute. This book focuses on team work, empathy, and creativity.
The story centers around a brave knight ARBI who is asked by his fellow villagers to save them from a dangerous fire-breathing dragon. ARBI enlists his good friends, Smarlow the tortoise, Agick the cat, and Smellit the dog. The four embark on their venture using their individual strengths to contribute to the overall success of their team.
To begin the AR experience, I opened the app which displayed some menu items to include, a mute button, information about the book/app, language selection, character information, and web links for ARBI. Prominently displayed at the center of the screen was a button, which when pressed, would begin the adventure. This activated the device's rear facing camera.
When opened, the book is set-up with story text appearing on the left-hand page and an illustration to the right. The illustrations act to trigger AR content and anchor that content to the page. When the illustration in the book is viewed through the device an imaginative AR model is presented. The app allows for a colorful page to be transformed into an animated - engaging display that helps bring the story to life. For this review I was a sole reader, but I see how when this book is married with AR a child could be extremely entertained and amazed. A few questions about the story pop-up along the way. If correctly answered - the story continues. If incorrect - a countdown of 45 seconds appears before another answer can be chosen. Instead of a reader getting their first answer wrong, then randomly choosing other answers just to move along, the author implemented a good way to encourage readers to reengage with the text to find the correct answer. Scores are tallied and displayed at the end of the story.
AR content is well-design and extremely stable when working in conjunction with the book pages. When user's move their device they can adjust their point of view of the AR model. The AR content enhances the overall narrative - book reading experience. Characters are supported with subtly sounds which embellish their movements. The integration of multiple choice questions is well placed and adds to the overall engagement with the reader. This book and app provide for a solid AR experience.
ARBI and the Treasure Chest continues to follow the brave knight and his friends. This book follows the crew as they discover an ancient treasure map drawn by the famous pirate Woodleg. They embark on their quest to find the most valuable treasure in the world. This book focuses on the importance of family and friendship, perseverance, and negotiation. It is geared for children ages 5 to 10.
The main screen is set-up the same as the ARBI book listed above. This book is styled in the same fashion as ARBI and the Fire-Breathing Dragon. Text is married well with AR content and readers are further engaged with the multiple choice questions. AR content works flawlessly and enhances the reader experience.
The ARBI Augmented Reality Coloring Book integrates the fun of coloring with an AR experience. Children can color characters on the page and see them take-life in the AR app. This book is geared for children ages 3+.
The main menu of the app allows users to change the language as well as view instructions. When readers click 'Play with the Book!' , the rear facing camera of their device is activated. The ARBI coloring book contains twelve pages which can be colored by the reader. Ten pages are of characters which appear in other ARBI books and two are of the ARBI Shire landscape.
To see how it all worked I broke out the trusty crayons and chose a character to color. Once I was done, I viewed the page through my device. This activated an animated AR model of the character which was anchored to the page. If I moved my device away from the page, the AR model remained, but in a slightly different view. I was able to choose from ten different actions I wished my character to do - from walk and run to fly and somersault. The AR model was well designed and was an accurate representation of my coloring. The last pages in the book consist of a Logic Game and a Memory Game. While neither employ any AR functionality, they do complement the overall user experience.
This coloring book acts as a good introduction to Augmented Reality for young learners. The AR does enhance the fun of coloring and complements the characters and story lines established in the story books.
