Lesson 2: Dissection of composite figures

In pairs, students select one of the following tangram puzzles. Individually, they dissect the shape into basic shapes using a tangram kit, or otherwise (e.g. drawing lines to create shapes).

Each student then compares their dissection with their partner and discuss:

• Similarities and differences in dissections
• If one dissection would be more efficient/easier to use to calculate its area

Pairs then select one dissection and use it to calculate its area. They then check their answer with other pairs who have selected the same puzzle.
