Do i need to have had previous campervan experience to hire a campervan?
No. Whilst I do ask you provide a little info of any previous experience you may have, it's certainly not crucial. I provide a full induction to the workings of the van when you arrive and i’m also contactable whilst you’re away if you experience any problems. As both vehicles are manuals, experience using a manual gearbox would be important however.
We're flying to Inverness Airport. How do I get to Ardersier Campervans?
As we're situated only 3 miles from Inverness Airport, I'm usually able to pick you up and drop you off at the airport. Flight times may not sync perfectly with standard pick-up and drop off times though as long as there is prior agreement, some flexibility should be possible to avoid long waits at the airport. I'm very happy to do this and no extra charge will be made for lifts to and from the airport. If you're getting the train up, getting picked up at Inverness Airport Train station should be fine too.
Your vans don't have any branding on your campervans... why is that?
There are plenty companies out there who plaster their logos and livery across their vehicles, however the absence of any signage or even a website address is a very purposeful act on my part. This is your holiday, not my advertising opportunity.
Where should I go, what should I do and see, on my campervan holiday?
This is such a subjective question that it's impossible to answer. As part of any confirmed booking, I will sending some general guidance though my advice is go with what kinda of trip inspires you. There are lots of different route options up here in the Highlands.
Can I bring my dog?
I do wish to be accommodating as possible though it does depend on a few factors so please get in touch first.
I have a non-UK license. Can I still hire a campervan?
This depends on a few factors. If you have an EU license, Australian or New Zealand license it may be possible - please get in touch. Unfortunately, the automatic impact on Excess amounts means it's not possible to hire to those with US or Canadian licenses.
Can I share the driving with my travel companion?
Yes, an additional driver is allowed as long as they satisfy the insurance criteria also. The primary driver must be the one who makes payment for the hire however. Further details within Insurance criteria.
Can I travel to the islands? ....the Hebrides or Orkney?
Yes, though I'd advise booking ferry tickets ahead of time. The Calmac website is good and the details of the vehicle will be found via entry of the vehicle registration.
Do you have a waiting room / offices / wider facilities at your base?
I conduct this hire business from home so the waiting room will be our kitchen table whilst I make you a cup of coffee :)
Can I have an overview of role and purpose of the security deposit?
It is regarded as a successful and smooth hire when the security deposit is refunded in full, however accidents do happen. If in the unfortunate circumstance that internal or external damage is sustained during a hire, it is vital that this is raised immediately. Transparency and honesty are valued. Due to how Ardersier Campervans operates, many repairs can be done in-house, as opposed to utilising external companies and where possible, this will be the route taken. This usually means for a lesser impact on the security deposit amount though please note, the nature of some repairs will certainly necessitate the use of external companies. Further details can be found here
Do I need to stay on campsites?...and book these ahead of time?
Guidance re this area will be sent with each confirmed booking though there aren't any simple answers. In summary, whilst both vans are equipped in a way which means that you don't necessarily need to stay on sites, it's generally a good idea to plan and ahead, particularly in peak season. I don't discourage off-site park-ups though it's imperative this is undertaken in a responsible manner. For those with no or minimal campervan experience, i would very much encourage planning ahead and booking campsites ahead of time. Advice re the more technical sides of "wild" park-ups will be provided and will form part of the induction.
Is there toilet on-board?
No, so public (or campsite) facilities will need to be used. Maps of public toilet locations can be found online.
What clothing should we bring with us?
Guidance re this area will be sent with each confirmed booking, however a short answer would be to try and avoid to bring lots and lots of stuff. You will not have the space for it and it will probably just get on your nerves.
Where can I read some reviews or feedback?
Even if you wish to book directly, please still check out the my reviews on Goboony for Meteor and Thermos. At the time of writing, there are around 40 positive reviews, exclusively 5-star. I'm really quite proud of this and i'm genuinely touched when hirers take the time to write a review, particularly when they reflect the my aims and values.
Can I get a discount for a longer trip?
For transparency and clarity, pricing is just based on a very competitive daily rate, which does not have any hidden extras, however if you're planning a trip of 2 weeks or more, then it'd fair to offer a discount. Please get in touch.
Do you do last minute bookings?
Potentially, though it really depends on other factors. To date, I've manage to hire to 4x other travellers who've had their own vehicle (both private and hired), break down. Each was achieved with less than 24 hours notice and on a couple of occasions, significantly less. It can be challenging for prospective hirers gaining the necessary supporting information for the insurance however, with modern day digital billing (for the POAs), it's still often possible.
What is summary of the booking process?
Choose which vehicle suits you best, check the calendar for available dates, have a read of the basic insurance criteria and the conditions of hire and then get in touch.
A booking is only regarded as confirmed when payment is made.
Supporting information (for the insurance), such as copies of drivers license(s), proof of address, DVLA check codes etc is gained over email after the booking is made but before the hire commences. This gets it settled, confirmed and in place comfortably before the hire date meaning you don't need to bring anything else when picking up the van.
Is there a security deposit and when does it does it need to be paid?
Yes, there is a security deposit of £750. This is a necessity of the insurance and the amount matches the excess on the insurance. It needs to be paid separately to the hire payment at least 4x weeks ahead of the hire date (or at the same time as hire payment if the hire is less than 4 weeks away).
What is the security deposit for and when will it be returned?
The security deposit is there to cover any damage sustained to the vehicle's interior or exterior during the hire. It will be returned within 7 days of the end of the hire as long as the vehicle is returned undamaged. If there is damage that is less than the security deposit amount, depending on the issue, it maybe longer than 7 day before the balance is returned as repair quotes may need to be gained.
Will I get an induction as to the working of the campervan?
Yes, and please understand that the induction isn’t optional. How long it takes usually is informed by whether you have some previous experience, for example, some hirers will not require detailed explanation about what a leisure battery is, charging or water systems, due to their previous experience though if this is a new experience to you I want you to feel comfortable with how things work so it very much in both our interest to spend a bit of time going over things. 45mins is a reasonable estimate of the time taken.
Should I book via Goboony or directly with Ardersier Campervans?
This is completely up to you. Since starting with 1x van in 2023, almost all hires have been through Goboony, however understandably they do not provide this service for free. Whilst this means booking directly will always be significantly more cost-effective and whilst your experience will be almost identical, it is fair to point out that Goboony provide some wider services which will not feature as part of a direct booking. Please see "Goboony vs Direct booking" for more details re this.
