Summit Goals & Agenda

Summit Goals & Format

The Summit has three main goals:

  • Facilitate discussions on the current and potential future conditions of Alaskan and Yukon Rivers

  • Inform the Arctic Rivers Project's climate, rivers, and fish modeling efforts

  • Develop action plans

The establishment of these goals was led by our Indigenous Advisory Council.

First goal: Facilitate discussions on the current and potential future conditions of Alaskan and Yukon rivers

Summit attendees will participate in discussions on the current and potential future conditions of Alaskan and Yukon Rivers considering Indigenous knowledge and western science perspectives including climate change. To that end, the Summit will host several knowledge exchanges including:

  • Elders Share

  • Arctic Rivers Project Overview

  • State of Arctic Rivers

  • Weaving Together Indigenous Knowledge with Western Science and Management.

During these exchanges, invited speakers will share their thoughts on the topics. Summit attendees are encouraged to share their perspectives and questions as well. Knowledge exchanges will also include feedback from the smaller group talking circles and roundtables described below.

Second goal: Inform the project's climate, rivers, & fish modeling

Summit attendees will identify areas of concern with respect to Indigenous livelihoods, river transportation, and fish species shifts and survival to inform the project modeling and ensure that the data produced will be useful for communities. The project modeling efforts focus on four areas: (1) climate, (2) rivers, and (3) fish. Small group talking circles will focus on these topics:

  • Community use of climate information

  • River ice and flow through the seasons

  • Fish through the seasons

The river and fish talking circles will include mapping exercises during which attendees will be asked to locate important river ice corridors or fish habitat areas on a map.

Third goal: Develop action plans

Summit attendees will collaborate to develop action plans centered around four topics:

(1) State of Salmon

(2) State of Rivers

(3) Partnering Indigenous Knowledge & Western Science for Management

(4) Youth & Elders: Building a Bridge of Traditional Knowledge

Each Summit attendee will be invited to participate in smaller group Taking Action Roundtables for two topics of personal interest. There will be opportunities to provide input on all four topics during large group discussions. Action plans will be developed using an analysis of Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats called SWOT.

Agenda: In Brief

The Summit will be highly interactive with approximately half of the time spent in smaller group discussions. After the Summit, participants will be invited to be a co-author on a Summit white paper. Participants do not need to do anything other than attend the Summit to become a co-author on the paper. For more information see the Agenda at a Glance below.
