O P I N I O N :
By Samantha Jones
After Natalie King's segment on the NFT Breakdown, the web buzzed about the sweeping updates to ARC’s NFT market website. Government leaders denounced the change to match the moral outrage of their voters. In all actuality, with all that’s going on in the world, this update shouldn’t be getting the amount of attention it is considering the update is only about aesthetics.
For only changing aesthetics, it's also signaling to people that ARC is significantly changing from its initial mission as a cryptomarket charity auction with the main directive being the preservation and revival of extinct species but now currently, several key economic factors are staked on the value of ARC's tokens, which has caused ARC to transform into a crypto-auction.
No, transformed is the wrong word here- ARC has evolved to adapt to our systems, our ecosystems if you will to survive; it’s initial premise is unapologetically hopeful and generous about undoing the mass extinction of most mammal species, the organization was unwillingly to deal with legalities of international copyright and land zoning to remain true to its cause to the point that ARC refused to to align itself with government or corporations. In our system, this is blood in the water.
So yeah, it is a bit of unnerving for an organization which had prioritized animal revival to quickly switch now to selling NFTs. It also doesn’t help that ARC switched out graphics of the animals to their DNA barcodes. It’s clearer more than ever that investors are simply just buying DNA code versus revival but ultimately if these changes mean that ARC survives and it’s survival guarantees the possibility of revival/preservation of extinct species…Who are we to judge? Perhaps as NFTs, these animals will thrive better in our ecosystem than they ever could living. This would also protect those who aren’t billionaires but instead buy ARC DNA sequences as a nest egg to stabilize their future through the form of 401Ks, mortgages, college funds and so forth. So if extinction already happened, why not make the best of it in our generation? Not to mention, perhaps this update gives our society time to truly consider if playing God with reviving entire species is the most ethical thing to do?
Also, some of the leaks for ARC’s exclusive items for long term investors look pretty sweet, like this 3D printed DNA barcode art piece.
