"(...) So I go back to the beginning, to the title of this article, and I wonder where have I felt scientific independence.

I have felt it in one room, in front of a blackboard on any random afternoon watching a small group of students and teachers discussing a problem. With the humility that imposes the weight of difficulty and the immense scientific tradition on the shoulders. But also with enthusiasm and especially with the feeling that science goes through that room, no matter what any official says, or any foreign eminence, or textbooks, the problem is there in front of our eyes and it depends on us to solve it.

It was in that strange community of young and old that I saw independence shining at least a couple of times at this university"

"(...) Entonces vuelvo al principio, al título de esta nota, y me pregunto dónde he sentido la independencia científica. 

La he sentido en una pieza, frente a un pizarrón en una tarde cualquiera viendo a un pequeño grupo de estudiantes y profesores discutir un problema. Con la humildad que impone el peso de la dificultad y de la inmensa tradición científica sobre las espaldas. Pero también con entusiasmo y sobre todo con la sensación de que la ciencia pasa por esa pieza, no importa lo que diga ningún funcionario, ni ninguna eminencia extranjera, ni los libros de texto, el problema está ahí delante de nuestros ojos y depende de nosotros mismos resolverlo. 

En esa comunidad extraña de jóvenes y viejos es donde vi brillar la independencia al menos un par de veces en esta universidad"
