The Children of Chaos series has been a passion project of mine since middle school. What started as brainstorming for an apocalypse themed Dungeons & Dragons campaign flourished Into an entire universe of characters, backstories, world and cosmos that Interweaves Itself through my other universes.
Starting as a very amateur "novel," The Children of Chaos series, at the time titled "The Last Generation," has been rewritten three separate times, a fourth If you count It being rewritten In screen play format, a platformer video game, and through hundreds of Illustrations of the characters.
The characters, who will be detailed below, were originally based on my friends at the time, the same ones building the D&D campaign. Over time, the main four became their own people, separated from their Inspirations. Their powers and how the group got them has changed dramatically, mostly due to the nature of this series' apocalypse.
Unlike mainstream apocalypse stories, there are no zombies or even survivors. The four pictured are the last Humans still alive on Earth, or are they? Instead of fighting the undead, they're fending off mutated animals, solving a conspiracies and battling to take back the world that they lost.
The "Apocalypse Saga" as I've dubbed It Isn't the only piece of the story. But It Is the catalyst for all the events to come.
!!!Spoilers Below!!!

Casper Wells was always different. Never quite fitting In with who he was born as. At age 7, his mother died, fracturing his family. Casper's Inner discomfort with his gender finally hit a boiling point at 13, when he comes out as trans to his father and sister. His father supported him and helped him transition, while his sister became more distant to both of them since their mother died. She left home for the city, supposedly joining a gang. At 16, Casper was attacked by an escaped experiment from Smith Laboratories, sending him to the ER. His face was badly scarred, specifically his left eye. While In the hospital, Nathaniel Smith, taking pity on him, Imbued Casper with artificial Aura.
During the apocalypse, Casper Is found by Alex after he hears Casper In pain, his eye responding to Aura Inside of Alex. getting attacked by a mutated Lizard, Alex unleashes his Optic Blast, killing the Mutant. Casper bonds with Alex, feeling closer to him than he ever had been to someone before. Coming out to Alex, he was nervous that It would ruin their budding relationship, but Alex was supportive, and still slightly affectionate, which Casper liked. Meeting Ben and Lynn, the group traveled to the past to undo the apocalypse. Casper and Alex begin dating.
In the Fall of 2019, The city of Willow Valley, Missouri Is the ground zero for a shock wave that rocked the Earth to Its core. All across the globe, people began to die of a virus known as "The Crimson Eye." Within two weeks, everyone of Earth had fallen Ill, and died. All but four children.
Alex Walker, age 16, traversed the horrid landscape, looking for anything he can to ensure his survival. The mutated creatures he's managed to slay all have a mysterious "S" branded onto their skin. He picked up an axe and a small amount of food, but never came across another person. That was until Alex met another survivor while scavenging for food in an abandoned department store.
Casper 'Cas' Wells, a 16 year old boy with faded dyed hair and bandage over his eye, assists Alex In escaping from a horrifically mutated lizard which had been stalking the Isles of the store. In an act of desperation Casper lifts his bandage and a beam of pure energy rockets from his eye, killing the lizard and saving them both.
Hijacking an abandoned RV, they hit the road. While discussing their pasts, Cas notices a billboard with the same "S" logo advertising "Smith Laboratories. Deciding that they should Investigate there, the two head In that direction. Upon nightfall, they park their stolen RV In a secluded and safe spot.
During the night, Alex and Casper bond, their shared trauma and Isolation bringing them closer. Cas comes out to Alex as a trans man, which he appreciates and supports. The two end up sleeping In the same bed together. The following day, they set off towards the city again before being stopped by barrier In the road.
Another survivor stood ahead of them, wielding a makeshift hammer made from a coil of rebar and a large cinder block. His face was covered by a Halloween store plague doctor mask. Alex and Cas step out of the RV, Alex making a shield from a stop sign. A battle between them ensued, ending with the two of them holding the boy down and explaining the situation.
Ben Matthews, age 17, led them through his junk yard base, explaining that In the few weeks before everyone's death, he and his gang "The Flock" took over the city and barricaded It, Ben being the gatekeeper. He reveals that he knows where the Lab Is, as It used to be a lot that his brother, the former gang leader, owned.
The three of them left for the city, Ben guiding them. Alex and Cas both held a bit of uncertainty about him. The devastation of the city left them unable to continue In the RV. They walked on foot, the air purple and eerie. A harsh fog blanketed the now empty city of Willow Valley. When sun finally set, the three held up In a hotel. The sounds of creatures flooded through the city, causing the three survivors to stay on edge all night.
A loud gun shot rung out In the hotel, followed by rushing footsteps. The three went to Investigate when they came face to face with a frightened woman In a hoodie, tattered hospital gown and holding a pistol. Her most striking feature, besides the pistol, was her piercing red eyes. Startled, she shot at the three, one headed straight for Alex's chest.
The bullet fell to the ground In front of him, having been stopped by Alex's mind. After realizing what she was doing, the woman explained her situation.
Lynn, age 18, escaped from a heavily quarantined hospital, having been trapped inside after everyone around her died, including the guards stationed outside of the hospital. She had been moving throughout the city, avoiding the experiments that had escaped from the lab. Smith Laboratories had been completely leveled by the shockwave, stopping the journey Alex and Cas first embarked on.
Lynn, however, has searched the city and had connected the apocalypse to Smith Labs as well. She says she learned about a back up Smith Labs facility under the city's Science Center. While she gave no evidence outside of a flyer for an exhibit sponsored by the lab, it was the only lead the group had to uncovering the conspiracy they stumbled into.
The next morning, the four survivors trekked through the fog infested city, everything cast in a purple hue. The eerie Science Center laid barren and empty, which the four traversed with ease. The bottom level held small departments for local scientists and their fields. However, Smith Lab's department took up an entire wing.
Splitting up, Ben and Lynn found a room holding a prototype weapon, The Atom Flux. Using a small amount of bioelectricity, Lynn powered on the information panel for the weapon, discovering that a fully operational Atom Flux was the cause of the current apocalypse. Meanwhile, Alex and Cas discovered a mysteriously operational computer. This computer held a database for all Smith Lab's employees and oddly, patients. Discovering all of their names in the database, Ben and Lynn join the two as the computer was suddenly hijacked, bringing them face to face with the man responsible for their situation.
Nathaniel Smith sat behind the screen, speaking to all of them. He divulged his plan, how this apocalypse was started to halt the progress of a cosmic being made from light, The Aura. He said that, for years ,no one believed him, but now Alex had been getting the same visions he had. Alex defends himself, brushing them off as dreams.
Explaining to the four that they are all his children, he pulls back their memories. Smith had bought The Flock's property off of Ben's brother. The payment, however, was making Ben invincible, per his brother's request. Casper had been injured by an experiment that had escaped the main Smith Lab facility, sending him to the ER. Smith personally visited Cas and gave him his enhancements. Alex, when he was born, gave off a high energy signal, one that Smith was studying. Each week until he was 8, Alex would visit Smith labs for testing under the guise of "Mental fortitude testing." Lastly, Smith reveals that Lynn Is actually his biological daughter, imbuing her, like the other three, with a substance that gave them Immunity to "The Crimson Eye" and special powers that would develop later In life.
The group feels betrayed by Lynn for hiding her familial connections. She snaps back, saying that Smith left her mother when she was young because she didn't believe him about the Aura. She disavows her father, regaining trust from the group. Smith continues to push them, explaining that The Aura Is coming, and that the human race needed to be taken out, lest The Aura gained too much power.
