College Admissions and Academic Tutoring
1. Read the specific requirement from your college application to find out how many letters are needed and who needs to submit. Most selective colleges require two from academic teachers and one from the guidance counselor.
2. Ask teachers who taught your core courses from the 11th grade (such as English, science, math, social science, or foreign language teachers). They are your most recent educational references, who taught you for a full academic year.
3. Consider a teacher who will be enthusiastic and feels comfortable recommending you. This will avoid weak letters, which would not strengthen your application.
4. Approach your teachers early, preferably before the end of your junior year. Make an appointment with your school counselor at the beginning of your 12th grade.
5. Attach a copy of your activity summary and your personal statement to your recommenders to give them a context of you in and outside of the classroom.
6. Remind your teacher about your class participation and achievements. Mention specific examples of your work or projects you are proud of and what you learned in the class.
7. Let your teachers know why you chose them. Tell them why their reference letter can provide an added dimension to your college application.
8. Waive your right to view recommendation letters. This would allow the recommenders to provide a more candid view of you. College admissions board may view more favorably for this authenticity.
9. Provide stamped and addressed envelope or specific instructions to send in the letter for each college that requested recommendation.
10. Clearly stated the deadlines that your reference needs to send in the letter for each school. Follow up with your references a least a week ahead of the deadline to make sure letters have been sent.
11. Write a thank-you note. Always show appreciation for people who helped you. In May before you graduate, share the good news about which college you decide to attend.
