CSI Comes to Life for Forensics Class
by Kirston Norton, Assistant Editor-in-ChiefForensics Files, CSI, Criminal Minds… these are names of some of the most watched crime television shows. But what if students could actually get to investigate a crime scene? Hempfield alum Laura Levic is the president of the Forensics Club and invited Mr. Tom Harden and his forensics class to Seton Hill University for a day to see what it is like to investigate a crime scene.
The students were broken into three groups and had the opportunity to “witness” a crime scene, sketch and photograph the crime scene, collect and document evidence, analyze the evidence, and solve the crime. Some of the methods of analyzing evidence included developing fingerprints, determination of blood types, DNA fingerprinting, and serial number recovery. Junior Gabriella Iezzi attended the mock crime scene and said, “It was very interactive and, honestly, is just an intriguing topic in which most people are not familiar with. It was a review of the entire forensics course at Hempfield, but in an entertaining simulation where you get to determine what happened to your victim!” This trip was the culmination of the year-long class and an effective method to enhance the curriculum.
Future Freshman Will Attend Harrold During Revitalization
by Ethan Duffy, News Editor & DesignerThe high school will have one more normal year of school before the official revitalization groundbreaking event in the summer of the 2023-2024 school year. The school district is considering restructuring the district’s three middle schools to use Harrold as a ninth-grade-only building until the revitalization process for the high school is completed in 2026.
With an overall decline in enrollment in the district, Wendover and West Hempfield Middle schools will be able to house all district students for grades six, seven, and eight. Since there will be only two middle schools, it will allow for maximizing resources and utilities, but also support consistency and equity in learning and instruction.
According to the Tribune Review, school board member Jerry Radebaugh said, “This is a daunting task and a hard decision that doesn’t come lightly, but I think, all in all, in the end, this is the best situation for all our students. It’s going to free up availability for the high school during the renovation to move people around, and it’s just what needs to happen right now.”

Call. Call and give us some justice. Give Sam the justice she deserves.” Junior Selena Torri gave her input on the murder, “It’s unnerving to know that it happened so close to home and no one knows why it happened.” Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Westmoreland branch of the Pennsylvania State Police at 724-832-3288.

Slap Heard Around the World
by Dylan Repasky, ReporterThe Oscars, one of television’s biggest award ceremonies, was highlighted in the news for all the wrong reasons this year. In a shocking moment of anger, Chris Rock was slapped by Will Smith after he made a joke about Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett's, closely-shaved head. She battles alopecia, which causes hair to fall out. Rock referenced her as a character in the popular classic G.I Jane who shaved her head and entered the service. Smith, who seemed to find the joke funny at first, quickly changed emotions after seeing his wife's reaction. He then stormed the stage in dramatic fashion to send a message by slapping Rock in the face and later screamed, “Keep my wife's name out your ******* mouth!”
Many students watched the surprising event play out on live television. Senior Andre Richards, who was watching said, “That was the craziest thing I have ever seen on live TV.” After a of couple days, things simmered down; however, the latest update on Smith is that The Crown Prince of Dubai “rescued” Smith by flying him to Dubai. Regarding the consequences from the Oscars, Smith resigned from the Oscars and cannot attend them for 10 years.
