Exhibit 4

Mane & Tail Magazine Cover

Background:

For this project, I created a magazine cover displaying one image overlaid on another.

Design:

Repetition: I used the color yellow in each of the article teasers.

Alignment: I centered the title from edge to edge giving me strong vertical lines on both sides of the magazine cover. I used these to align the article teasers to the left and right.

Color: The horse was a nice chestnut brown. I wanted to showcase the warmth of the coat so I placed him on top of a deep red wall. For a bit of contrast, I added some yellow to the text.

Type: I used a decorative typeface, Boots & Spurs and a sans serif, Century Gothic.

Photoshop Skills Used:

Masking: I used the Quick select tool to grab the outline of the horse. Then I switched over to Select and Mask to refine the edge of the horse. I particularly wanted to make sure I captured as much hair as possible.

Hue & Saturation: I felt there was not enough contrast between the horse and the barn wall. I added adjusted the hue and saturation to make the wall a deeper red a bit darker.

Layers: Once I had cut out the horse, I layered him on top of the barn wall. I added text layers. I organized my layers by grouping them in folders.

Fx: To make the text stand out, I used outer glow and drop shadowing.

Transform: To add the magazine cover to an image, I overlaid the cover image and used the transform/warp feature to align my cover with the magazine on the desk.

Crop: I used the crop tool to adjust the sizes of the red wall and the desk layout.
