Mystery and Magic of Photon Interference

Zhe Yu Jeff Ou

Department of Physics, City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong

Quantum interference is the key to understanding quantum mechanics. It is also the gateway to many applications of quantum technology. We will reveal how quantum interference is the underlying physics of some seemingly unrelated phenomena such as stimulated emission and quantum noise reduction. We will discuss the connection between quantum interference and multi-photon distinguishability and find what defines a photon. The application of quantum interference in optical sensing leads to a new type of non-traditional SU(1,1) interferometers. This quantum interferometer has many advantages over traditional interferometers, such as Mach-Zehnder interferometers, and provides a platform for a wide range of applications of quantum technology.
