When you set up iCloud, you automatically get 5GB of storage. You can use that space for your iCloud backups, to keep your photos and videos stored in iCloud Photos, to keep your documents up to date in iCloud Drive, and more. You can always check how much iCloud storage you're using in Settings on your device or on iCloud.com. If you're running low, you can manage your storage to make more space or upgrade to iCloud+ any time.

If you're getting low on storage in iOS 17 or iPadOS 17 or later, you can go to Recommended for You in your iCloud settings and check if there are photos, large files, or backups that you might not need anymore and can delete.

Many apps automatically back up to iCloud after you install them. You can decrease the size of your iCloud Backup and free up space in iCloud when you stop backing up apps that you don't use or delete old iCloud backups.

iCloud Photos uses your iCloud storage to keep all of your photos and videos up to date across your devices. You can make more space in iCloud when you delete photos and videos that you no longer need from the Photos app on any of your devices.

Before you delete anything, make sure that you back up the photos and videos that you still want. When you use iCloud Photos and delete a photo or video on one device, it's also deleted on all other devices where you're signed in with the same Apple ID.

If you are part of an iCloud Shared Photo Library, photos added to the Shared Library only count towards the storage of the person who created the Shared Library. To delete items that count towards your iCloud storage, make sure that you're viewing your Personal Library.

To reduce the size of your Photos backup, save your photos and videos to your computer, then manually back up your device. If you want to keep your photos and videos on your device, you can turn off Photos in Backup or upgrade to iCloud+ for more storage. If there are any photos that you don't want to keep, you can delete them:

You can recover photos and videos that you delete from your Recently Deleted album for 30 days. If you want to remove content from Recently Deleted album faster, tap Select, then select the items you want to remove. Tap Delete > Delete. If you exceed your iCloud storage limit, your device immediately removes any photos and videos you delete and they won't be available for recovery in your Recently Deleted album.

iCloud+ is a premium subscription that provides additional storage to keep your photos, videos, files, and more backed up and automatically available across your devices. It also includes access to features like iCloud Private Relay, Hide My Email, Custom Email Domain, and HomeKit Secure Video support for a private and connected experience.

The Photos app can detect duplicates of photos in your collection. A file is determined to be a duplicate if it has the same file name and file size as other photos in your collection. A file can be considered a duplicate even if it's stored in a different location.

You're able to browse your collection by date, album, video project, folder, or tags you have applied to your photos. You also have the option of turning on the facial grouping feature as another way of finding photos in your collection. Facial grouping finds similar faces across photos or videos and sorts those groupings into albums, allowing you to tag those albums with nicknames you choose. This feature can be turned on or off in the Photos app's settings page and in the People tab. Learn more about the facial grouping feature.

If you have more than one app that does the same thing, you can pick which app to use by default. For example, if you have multiple photo editing apps, you can choose which one to use to open a photo.

Adobe Lightroom remains an industry standard for professional photographers and the mobile version is much the same. You'll find no stickers, animations or emoji here, but you will get fine grain control over your image and the same set of tools you'd find in Lightroom on desktop. It's the app I use the most to edit my own images on my iPhone and iPad, not least because the images sync in the cloud, letting me start on one device, and continue on another.

Since I turned to iPhone photography in 2012, I have tried to find ways to make low noise and sharp photos at night with my iPhone. This blog post will outline three ways to do night photography with iPhone and show you which apps and accessories I use.

All of the three camera apps I use for taking photos at night with iPhone have a dedicated low light or night mode. Slow Shutter Cam App was one of the first apps to offer such a night mode. Then came low light mode in ProCamera App and finally Apple released the night mode in the stock iPhone camera app.

As noise occures randomly in a photo, layering multiple exposures basically allows you to completely eliminate noise that often occures in photos taken a t night. Moreover, similar to HDR, some algorithms will even improve the exposure.

Did you notice the Lux+ icon on the left side of the screen? ProCamera will apply an extra boost to the exposure time by tapping it and enables you to take well-lit photos in challenging low light situations. I use it mainly when photographing inside abandoned buildings.

Please choose the Low Light mode to take photos in low light situations. Because I can manually adjust ISO and shutter speed, Slow Shutter Cam app is my preferred app for really challenging light conditions. You won't find that level of control in the stock camera app or the ProCamera app.

Once you've chosen low light mode, set the noise reduction, shutter speed, and ISO. I generally recommend setting noise reduction to low and ISO to a value around 100 or even lower. If you set noise reduction to anything higher than low, you may kill all the fine details in your photo. If you set ISO to a value higher than 100, your image may be noisy.

In recent years, photo-based smart phone applications (apps) have been developed to aid with plant identification in the field. These apps boast their accuracy and many claim to provide identification for a wide array of species simply based on an image of the foliage. Do these apps work? And, if so, how accurate can they be?

At least 4 images of both bark and leaves for each tree species were submitted to each app and researchers observed and recorded the results. The apps use photo recognition software programmed to identify leaves and bark based on the common characteristics of these plant parts.

To me, it is extraordinary that these apps are even able to process visual data and generate near accurate results. As a trained botanist, I know that 2 leaves for the same tree can often vary widely. While there is typically a recognizable pattern and some distinctive characteristics common across all leaves on the same plant, certain species (typically within the same genus) can have very similar leaf characteristics, making it possible for a single plant to have individual leaves in its canopy which are distinctive of its true species and other leaves that would lead you to believe its another, similar-looking species.

Knowledgeable botanists are aware of these nuances and take care to assess several leaves at differing locations within the canopy. However, beginners often make the common mistake of looking at one low-hanging leaf, which may or may not be the best example to observe. Due to instances like this, I have always discounted the use of plant identification apps and have not recommended them to beginners. However, some promising results were uncovered by Rutgers.

Each phone app makes suggestions, often several, for species-level identification of the plant picture in question. The Rutgers study found that while species-level identification by leaf pictures was not always the most accurate (83.9% to 40.9% accurate), across all the apps observed, genus-level identification by leaves was pretty good, reporting accuracies from 97.3% to 71.8%. Across all apps and all species, identification by bark pictures alone was not nearly as accurate as identification by leaves.

While the Rutgers study presents some fascinating data, this research did not assess the community aspect that some of these apps provide. Several of the apps in this study also offer an option where users can ask the community of other app users to identify their plant photo. I have found that community responses on these apps are typically highly accurate to species-level and often come from experts. So, when beginners can combine phone apps with other tools, such as community responses and the use of guidebooks or other reference materials, these applications have promising potential.

But it also has tools for advanced photo editing. These include brushes and selective editing which allow you to edit only certain parts of an image. And the healing tool lets you remove unwanted objects from your photos.

Artistic tools let you turn a photo into a sketch or drawing. You can personalize your photos using brushes, design elements, text, borders, and frames. And you can arrange your photos into a collage.

The handy editing suite offers tools to improve exposure, color, and clarity. Or you can use the one-tap filters to quickly change the look and feel of your photo. The layers feature lets you stack several different filters for a unique look. 17dc91bb1f
