Waste is one of the main contemporary environmental problems, which has no borders and poses a potential danger to public health. Decaying garbage is a favorable environment for a number of micro-organisms, that can cause infections and diseases. The amount of solid waste is rising very rapidly and it is a great necessity to minimize the volume of waste that goes to landfills. This environmental issue imposes additional requirements to the waste management system of participating regions: Kohtla-Järve, Slantsy and Pskov. As selective waste collection makes a major contribution to improving the above mentioned environmental situation, partners will construct underground (Kohtla-Järve, Pskov) and on-ground (Slantsy) recycling points to municipal institutions like kindergartens and schools and install there modern, completely sealed containers which will secure eco-friendly environment and create harmless conditions. This system allows to completely avoid spilling the liquid, flowing out of the garbage, and getting it into the soil and exclude the spread of any infections. Waste sorting can significantly reduce the amount of waste sent to the landfill for burying, which in turn reduces the contamination of soil, groundwater and water bodies. Through waste sorting it is possible to reach less energy-intensive processing of solid waste and produce new kinds of products. Special attention will be focused on the necessity to separate different kinds of waste and placing it into the appropriate container.
Overall objective: decreasing environmental risks in the cross-border region by way of improving solid waste management systems, ensuring effective waste separation and constructing at municipal institutions modern waste collection points with sealed containers.
Specific objectives: construction of waste collection points; education and popularisation of the need for the separation of solid waste; creation of the conditions for cost-effective recycling of waste materials.
Final beneficiaries: the entire population of participating regions, regardless of age and sex, whose living environment the project positively affects (Kohtla-Jarve about 35000 people, Slantsy about 30000 people, Pskov town about 200000 people).
Direct target group: specialists on environmental issues of local administrations, employees of municipal institutions, specialists from waste management companies.
Indirect target group: teachers, children, youth, elderly people, medical workers, whose attention will be drawn to the need of sorting waste and involving them into this process at their institutions, and who subsequently will continue this habit at their homes.
Activities and results:
*Waste collection points with different types of containers will be constructed. Involved institutions will get modern sites, opportunity to separate waste and hand it over for recycling. Results: 25 waste collection points will be constructed in Estonia, Kohtla-Järve town; 10 waste collection points in Russia: Slantsy and Pskov regions.
