Welcome to Appleseeds: Evidence-Based Foundational Skills for Massachusetts!
Appleseeds is a free, open-source foundational skills program developed by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for Kindergarten through Grade 2. It provides systematic and explicit instruction through daily lessons, student workbooks, decodable readers, assessments, and educator resources.
Using Appleseeds
Appleseeds is a standalone K–2 foundational skills program, not a comprehensive K–3 literacy curriculum. It can be used alongside a comprehensive core literacy curriculum.
Beginning in the 2027–28 school year, districts using Appleseeds to meet the foundational skills portion of the Student Literacy Act requirements will also need approved foundational skills materials for Grade 3. DESE is developing a free K–3 literacy curriculum that will include a K–3 foundational skills program that may be used separately, including to provide Grade 3 instruction alongside Appleseeds.
Finding Appleseeds Materials
The Instructional Materials page linked below provides access to Kindergarten, Grade 1, and Grade 2 materials. Within each grade-level folder:
Family letters (available in multiple languages) are available in a dedicated folder.
Decodable readers are included within the corresponding unit folders.
