To quickly create a word processing document or a page layout document, see the first two tasks below. To see more detailed formatting and design options (including formatting for another language), see the third task.

Add or edit text: In a word processing document, just begin typing. The blinking insertion point indicates where your text starts. In a page layout document, add a text box (see below), then type. To edit text, select the text, then type. To format the selected text, tap to open the text controls.

I can create and edit new Word docs, but every time I open an old word doc that is saved in iCloud, it opens it but I cannot edit it at all... I cannot type, change font, anything... The only option is to create a copy and then edit that - but this is not what I want.

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. We understand that you are having some trouble with editing MS Word documents using your iPad though you do have a Microsoft 365 account. We will be glad to assist.

I have Word documents in my iCloud drive. When I try to access them on my iPad, it will only let me print (when I open it, I get a print screen). I can't edit those Word documents on my iPad. I swear I used to do be able to do this. Does anyone understand what's going on? Is this just some weird problem between Microsoft and Apple? When I try to access the document directly from Word, I don't have the option to get into my iCloud Drive. Help!

The Word App may not be able to directly edit Word documents that are stored in iCloud - but may require that you create a local copy with which to make edits. Alternatively, storing your Microsoft documents in OneDrive may work-around this limitation.

Life on the move forces us to solve our problems on the go, including working with documents. Mobile apps are no longer limited to just viewing documents. Today the requirements for mobile offices are expanding. You also need to collaborate and edit Word documents on iPhone. For example, your colleagues ask you to review and correct a document urgently, or you need to correct mistakes or typos in a document and email it to a public organization. All of this is impossible to do without a handy app.

Those who have connected to the ONLYOFFICE cloud can also edit Word documents with their colleagues. ONLYOFFICE Documents for iOS allows you to share documents with different levels of access rights: full access, commenting, and read-only.

The application includes full-featured editors for working with Word documents on iPhone: page, paragraph, and text formatting, tables, shapes, charts, etc. For more convenient editing even in darkened environments, the developers have added a dark theme to your Word documents.

You can also access your files from iCloud, where you can save documents and access them from other Apple devices. Unfortunately, the app does not support third-party cloud storage for collaboration via Dropbox, Google Drive, or other cloud storage services.

Google Docs is one more app to edit Word document on iPhone. Docs lets you create, edit, share and collaborate on documents stored in Google Drive. Google Docs is compatible with DOC and DOCX files, allowing you to open Word files. The application has the basic functions of a text editor. However, for more advanced editing, it is not suitable.

WPS Office is a free mobile office suite for iPhones and iPads consisting of Writer, Spreadsheet, Presentation, and the PDF toolkit. The suite lets you create documents, presentations, spreadsheets, notes, and PDF files all in one. You can share documents in a variety of formats, including DOC and DOCX, and convert them to other file formats.

The app allows automatic saving of office documents to the cloud: Dropbox, Google Drive, Box, Evernote, and OneDrive, so that all your documents are always up-to-date in the cloud service. Using a simple interface, WPS Office is easy to start working on your iPad.

Notes Writer is a free application that was created for notes. Now the app lets you take notes, annotate, edit PDFs, fill in forms, sign documents, insert clipart as well as format text, and export various files. You can also organize and manage your notes in an unlimited number of notebooks, folders, and subfolders. Once you complete your notes, you can share them across cloud storage services: Google Drive and Dropbox.

I'm unsure if this is issue with Mac or Gmail but I am trying to open a word document sent to me on gmail, whenever I download it, it automatically downloads as a pages document. There is no option to download in it's original format, and it is driving me crazy. When it converts to a Pages doc it loses some of the document. I have tried on safari and chrome, both do the same thing. If I open it as google doc, loses half the document again. Why is it automatically converting it? and how can I stop this feature? I just want all documents to download in their original format then I convert them if necessary. Thank you in advance

Although the iPhone does not have a built-in application for editing Microsoft Word documents, it is able to view them within its native Mail and Safari apps. This preview feature can be supplemented by the use of third-party office and word processing applications, should you also wish to edit a Word doc on your iPhone. Using the iPhone's built-in Word doc compatibility can negate the need to open your work files on a computer or laptop, making for a more efficient and portable remote office device.

in a post that Apple has decided is too old to let me respond to directly (which would make the context easier for all of us) someone suggested: Choose "file" from menu and then choose "export". You can then export the notes file to pdf or word, etc.

Use Apple Pencil on your iPad to sketch, illustrate, and create documents. Draw and fine-tune your idea, then press play to watch each stroke animate onto the page. And with Smart Annotation, your edits stay with the marked-up text, making it easy for you and your team to incorporate changes.

Many of my new Word documents are opening as read-only whenever I try and edit them on my iPad or iPhone. This is not happening to all of my recent files. It's not even happening to all the files in that particular folder. I can open some older files in the same folders and they are editable, but some files show up as read-only. I can save a copy of the file in the mobile apps and name it the same as the original and then edit that file, but that's a long workaround. Thanks for the help. [FWIW: I recently (last 4 months) got a new laptop, iPhone, and iPad.]

Yesterday our computer did an automatic upgrade. I'm not sure what it upgraded, as I did not see it. Today, my iphone will no longer print a word document from email. It will pull up the document and when I click print it captures the HP printer and shows the number of pages to be printed, however the content does not appear in the print preview. All that is there are blank pages and as a result, that is what prints--blank pages. I can print the actual email or I can print from my notes apps. It will print pdfs. It will not print the word document. Can some one help with this?

Welcome to the HP Support Forums! I understand that you are having difficulty printing word documents from your iPhone, kudos to you for trying to follow the previously recommended steps. I will be glad to help you from here.

Old format Word documents (Word Document 97-2004 .doc) aren't compatible with iOS, so when you're sent a letter in this format you won't be able to view them immediately. But there are a couple of options!

I have an iPhone app consisting of a few forms in which I collect data from users. Now at the end of these forms, after user has filled all data, I want that all the collected data is exported and a MS word .doc file is generated. The data too is not simple text. There are headings, tables along with normal text in it. Is there any way I can accomplish this?

You can't do this to create "proper" Word documents, however you should be able to acomplish this on any platform by building the word doc from HTML and saving it with a .doc extension (instead of HTML). You can put anything in there, custom layouts - I'd probably stick to paragraphs and tables and floated elements (like imgs and such).

There may be extra code you will need in the HTML doc (for instance to make it open in page view rather than in HTML view) but you can figure all that out by saving a word doc in HTML format. :) There's also a lot of information on the internet about it if you know where to look.

I have a password-protected Word document that I need to keep on my iPhone for reference. I can open it and view it but cannot edit it when I need to, even though I am logged into Word. The pencil always stays grayed out.. My only recourse is to edit the document on my PC and download it to the iPhone. If I am not signed in to Word and I tap on the document, Word asks for the password to open the document, which I provide. The document opens, but I am not able to edit. I cannot sign in to edit. If I first sign into Word, I select the document, tap on it and Word asks for the password to open the document, which I provide. The document opens, but I am not able to edit. I am signed in to Word, but cannot edit. Same as when I am not signed it! What is the problem? Is there a work around???
