Welcome to the Apollo HAWKS NJROTC Unit!

Founded in 1972 by Commander Tray Ray, the Apollo High School NJROTC Unit has a proud history of leadership, discipline, and service. Over the past 54 years, more than 4,200 students have graduated from the program. Apollo NJROTC has earned honors such as Honor Unit, Unit Achievement, and Distinguished Organization. In 1991, under Lieutenant Commander Terry Tassin, the unit was recognized as the Outstanding NJROTC Unit in the United States. Today, Apollo NJROTC continues to develop student leaders through teamwork, responsibility, and community service.

- Our Teams -

Apollo NJROTC offers a variety of co-curricular teams and activities including Color Guard, Drill Team, Arms Team, Air Rifle, Orienteering, Community Service, and Academics. These programs help cadets build leadership, teamwork, discipline, physical fitness, and strong friendships both inside and outside the classroom.

- Community Service -

Every cadet is encouraged to participate in Community Service. Cadets can earn hours by serving organizations like Feed My Starving Children, Help For The Homeless, Helping clean up our campus, helping our community stay clean or sending soldiers overseas care packages, to name a few.

The NJROTC Community Service program has completed 1090 hours in total over the units existence.

The unit motto, "Lead, Follow, or Stand Aside," represents the responsibility every cadet has to make a meaningful choice. Cadets are called to step forward and lead with courage, or support others by following with loyalty, discipline, and dedication. In NJROTC, there is no room for half-hearted effort or hesitation, because the success of the unit depends on every cadet working together with purpose and commitment.

This motto reminds us that being a part of this program is a choice, and that choice carries responsibility. Every cadet is expected to give their best, support their teammates, and continually strive to grow as leaders and citizens. Success is achieved through unity, integrity, and the willingness of every individual to fulfill their role. Whether leading from the front or following with commitment, each cadet contributes to the strength and excellence of the unit.

Commander McCammon enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1988, completed basic training at San Diego, California, completed Aviation ordnancman training in Millington, Tennesee and assigned to Sea Control Squadron FOUR ONE.

In 1992, he served SEACONRON THREE FIVE, San Diego, CA, completing three ardouous six-month deployments to the Persian Guld. He graduated from ITT Technical Institute, San Diego, CA in March 1993 reciving an Ased Eductation Advancemnet Program (EEAP) and attending Southwestern Community College, San Diego, CA from DEcember 1998 to January 2001 reciving an an Associates of Arts Degree in Computer Information Systems. Reported to SEACONRON TWO NINE in 2001, completing an historic eight month deployment. He was promoted and initiated a Chief Petty Officer on Sept 16, 2003. In April 2004, Chief McCammon report to helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron SIX. In Febuary 2005 he accepted and was commisioned a Limited Duty Officer Ensign, United States Navy. He reported to the, USS BOXER (LHD-4) as the Air Gunner. In May 2008, he reported to Afloat Training Group (ATG), San Diego, CA as Assistant Material Trainer. While theere he graducated Summa Cum Laude in March 2009 with a Bacelor degree in informaation Technology Computer Systems from American Interconitental University. In 2010 he reported to commander, CVW-17, Lemoore, California and the USS CARL VINSON Battle Group where he served until August 2013 completing two back to bacl deployments to the Arabian Guld. In september 2013, he reported to Navy Munitons Command, CONUS West Divison Deffered for his final time to Navy Munitions Command CONUS West Divison Seal Beach, California where he served until his retirment in October 2018, Commander McCammon was employed and served as thee Senior Naval Scienece Instructor at Glendale High School from 2018-2020.

Master Chief Petty Officer Manuwa, a native of Honolulu, Hawaii, enlisted in the United States Navy in 1989. After completing Recruit Training in San Diego, California, he received his first assignment aboard USS Nicholson (DD-982) in Charleston, South Carolina.

Throughout his distinguished 30-year naval career, Master Chief Manuwa served on multiple cruiser and fast frigate ships in San Diego, California, as an Operations Specialist. His assignments also included Navy Recruiting Districts Albuquerque and Phoenix; Mine Countermeasure Rotational Crew “Golf” in Ingleside, Texas; Assault Craft Unit FIVE (ACU-5) at Camp Pendleton, California, where he served as a Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC) Navigator; USS Boxer (LHD-4) in San Diego, California; Commander, Third Fleet in Point Loma, California; and Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Illinois, where he served as a Drill Instructor.

Additional assignments included Joint Airborne Battle Staff at Balad Air Base, Iraq; SEAL Team THREE in Coronado, California; Joint Task Force at Fort Bragg, North Carolina; and United States Central Command (USCENTCOM) in Tampa, Florida. While assigned to USCENTCOM, he served as the Operations and Navy Senior Enlisted Leader for more than 750 military and civilian personnel.

Master Chief Manuwa retired from active duty in 2019 after 30 years of honorable service and accepted the position of Naval Science Instructor at Apollo High School, where he continues preparing young men and women for future success.

Master Chief is a graduate of the U.S. Navy Senior Enlisted Academy in Newport, Rhode Island. He also earned both an Associate of Arts degree and a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Columbia Southern University.

During his naval career, Master Chief Manuwa qualified as an Enlisted Expeditionary Warfare Specialist, Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist, Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist, Coxswain, Certified Instructor, and Master Training Specialist.

His personal awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal (two awards), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (two awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (six awards), along with numerous unit and campaign awards.
