FCML members have successfully conducted the biomass recycling experiment. In specific, tobacco-derived carbonaceous materials synthesized for supercapacitor applications. Also, polypyrrole is doped onto the tobacco-derived carbon to excel the capacitance. Finally, asymmetric supercapacitor device is assembled and applied for LED lightening experiment. As a result, tobacco-derived asymmetric supercapacitor device is able to lighten up the LED bulb, indicating the superior electrochemical performance. Click for link on Youtube.
FCML members have attended to 2021 KSIEC fall meeting at Daegu Exco (11/4~5). We presented two posters for this meeting.
It was first academic conference experiences for Jekal, Jiwon, Giryeong and Gwang-jik. Well-done everyone for making posters.
All members had fun in Daegu, and we are planning to attend for 2022 KSIEC spring meeting at Jaeju upcoming May.

Surface energy of solid can be easily measured by the dyne pen. Each dyne pen has specific number of surface energy (or surface tension) is marked with unit of mN/m. As shown in Youtube Link, if the surface energy of a solid is match to dyne pen, then dyne pen is well mark and stay on the surface. Find out the easiest method to measured the surface energy of material.
Spiropyran chemical is known for its reversible isomerization: merocyanine (MC form) and spiropyran (SP form) under UV and VIS lights. Under UV light, merocyanine manifests reddish color and spiropyran shows yellowish color. This reversible isomerization of spiropyran shows the typical characteristic of photochemistry. In addition, polarity of two isomers, SP and MC, are completely different in polar zwitter ionic and non-polar. In this regard, two isomers show completely different reaction mechanism with solvent, matrix, and chemicals under UV-VIS lights.
Various silane chemicals with different tails were treated on the surface of silica materials. For the analysis, each silane treated materials were added to the water as shown in the image. Interestingly, normal silica material with hydrophilicity were sank quickly into the bottom of the water (#1), and silane treated silica materials were floating on the water surface (#2 and #4) showing excellent hydrophobic properties.

Silane chemical is one of the most effective way to assign functionality to SiO2/TiO2 materials. In this experiment, we have modified hydrophilic surface of TiO2 to hydrophobic using various silane chemicals. For detailed experimental method, click here for the live experiment broadcast in Youtube.
Giryeong is synthesizing various silane-treated TiO2(titania) materials using multi-stirrer. Each sample is treated with silane with different functional group and hydrocarbon chains. After 12h of reaction, each sample will be centrifuged to retrieve the silane-treated samples.

Jiwon is measuring the contact angle of Silane-treated Pearlescent Pigments at KRICT. Our goal is to synthesize the Pearlescent pigments with superb hydrophobicity.

Jekal is taking look on potentiostat/galvanostat. His major research topic is electrochemistry (supercapacitor/battery).
